This is one of my favorite rivers to fish in Illinois and I spent countless hours chasing Smallmouths on this body of water. I hope to hear what the Chemical was and that these two are charged.

Fox River fish kill caused by chemicals

May 17, 2010 at 06:35 AM

SOUTH ELGIN, Ill. (AP) - Authorities say no charges have been filed in connection with the alleged dumping of chemicals into the Fox River that left fish and wildlife dead.

Witnesses called South Elgin police on Saturday after seeing bubbles floating downstream and fish popping up from the water.

Police Sgt. Randy Endean says officers and fire officials followed the bubbles to their source. There, he says they found two people putting substances into the water.

Endean wouldn’t say what the substance was.

The case has been turned over to conservation police from the state’s Department of Natural Resources. Spokeswoman Januari Smith says state officials are investigating.

Endean says workers have been cleaning the water, recovering dead fish and caring for affected wildlife.

That just goes all over me! I am glad they caught them so quick. I really enjoyed all the stories you told me about this river. I would like to fish it some day myself. Keep us posted.

Good Lord, why?

It must be something strong to react that quickly. Any idea what other wildlife is affected?

I'm wondering if they weren't dumping thier meth lab chemicals? That seems to be the thing to do. They set by creeks and rivers and dump the crap in the water when they are done.

If fishing was easy it would be called catching.

Very good point.

We have a small farm in Iowa that we are developing for recreational purposes (hopefully by the time my wife and I pass it will be established for the grandkids....but I digress). It sits about 1000' feet off of the Missouri and is adjacent to state land. One weekend about 5 years ago my wife and I head up to the farm for some r & r. As we pull into the yard I can see all kinds of tire tracks out behind the barn, heading towards the river......"What the heck??"

About that time the neighbor comes over on his atv. One of his passions is long bow hunting. The week before he had been scouting areas on the state land and had discovered a working meth lab. He high tailed it out of there and called the sheriff. Where the neighbor had found the lab was kind of land locked so the cops drove through our property to get as close as possible for the disposal team. Apparently they had been using the spot for awhile because the land was scorched and remains so.

It changed our outlook on being in the country. Our land is very close to where Lewis and Clark had an encampment. We enjoy imagining the simplicity of those days and their travels. Contrast that to some meth head cooking his concoction and it has left me very disappointed in some of my fellow men. The sheriff said to call him if we see any suspicious activity. Anymore if I see headlights down by the river late at night I wonder if it's some kid trying to hit on his girlfriend or some crack head......to call or not to call.

Gilly I feel your pain, check the "new laws" thread.

I wonder if the guilty were trespassing?

Thanks for the heads up, redbud.
