Members Bad cast Posted May 18, 2010 Members Posted May 18, 2010 I'm heading down to Lileys this weekend with the family and plan to try to teach them to trout fish. I might be biten off more than I can chew but oh well. I think drifting in the boat may be the the easy thing to do. I've did a little myself but mostly flyfish or use jigs. I have a few rods setup for crappie that have green braid and a few with 4lb green max that I trout fish with. I'm going to make up a bunch of rigs ahead to save time in the boat. Can I use my crappie rods with braid or would I be better off changing line. Is it better to use a strait 4lb line or use 8 and use a tippet. I'm afraid if let them fish to light breaking off every 5 seconds might be an issue. Any advice on a good setup. If I use the braid with a weight and swivel and tie on a leader will this hamper them from catching fish. I want them to catch fish most of all so if I have to go light I will. Any suggestions. Randy
Leonard Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Randy.. Personally.. Id say you would be ok with the 4lb Maxima.. (I myself love it!) The braided... I dont know about.. never trid to bait/drift with it.. your crappie rod sould work just fine... Although... If you are looking to replace the line.. I would suggest going up to 6lb maxima (ultragreen).. I use it on my spinning when bait fishing... and and I have 8lb on the second spools for jigs/rapalas (and have bait fished using it.. and still catch fish on it).. With the rain coming again this week.. look for high water this weekend (3 to 4 units).. so beefing up to 6 or 8 to jig fish (while drifting) is probably what " I " would do.... http://www.taneycomonights.com
Members Bad cast Posted May 18, 2010 Author Members Posted May 18, 2010 Thanks Leonard, is there aa general rule of thumb for weight needed per unit to get the bait down. Also are nightcrawlers better powerbait for the fish holding on longer. I've took these gals crappie fishing and there slooooow on the hookset.
Fly_Guy Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 if you get the Gulp brand of powereggs, the trout will swallow them rather than gum them for a while and spit them out. I went with some folks who weren't able to feel the bite well, and they did just fine. I love braided line and use it powerbait fishing, but I would tie a loop, and use a two foot section of 4lb line (my preference is Berkely Vanish). Put your weights up in the stronger braided line, and you will keep from fraying the 4lb leader if you use a split shot or sliding weight. this pic is my favorite Taneycomo powerbait rig. Vary the bass weight size depending on current. I don't know if there is a rule or not, but you want to feel it ticking the bottom, w/out getting hung up.
