I'm heading down to the Big Piney for a floater with some friends the second weekend in July. I usually hit the smallies on a sneaky pete with my five weight fly rod, however, I'm thinking about taking a spin rod with me also. Can anyone tell me what kind of plastics I need to throw at them. Any help is appreciated.

I need a little more information on what size rod you'll be using- some of my favorite plastics would not work on a light action rod.

I will probably be taking a medium action 6ft. Pflueger spinning rig. No ultra-light stuff. Any lures that work well. I have a pretty big selection of rod/reels, so if you can point me in the right direction on lures, I can probably accomodate it.

My personal favorite soft plastic is a Zoom super fluke-colors white pearl or glimmer blue. Rig it Texas style with a 4/0 ewg hook. Fish it slow and don't be afraid to throw it anywhere. In deeper water let it sink before you start your retrieve. Another good plastic is a Chompers centipede, rigged with a 2/0 hook and an 1/8 oz sinker-color green pumpkin. I also use a 5" Chompers spider craw on a 1/8 or 1/4 oz. stand up jig head-color green pumpkin. If these don't work I downsize to a small grub or a 4" straight tail worm-color purple.

By the way I always make sure they're not hitting on topwaters first-MUCH MORE FUN.

Hope this helps-Riverrat

I agree, topwater is the best :P . Thanks for the help. I'm looking forward to the trip. Beautiful river without the congestion of the rest of the ozark float streams.

agree with the above and i also downsize alot with a 2" soft plastic craw on a 1/8 or 1/16 oz jig head. middle of the summer, sometimes you need to finesse em a little...especially midday.

good luck.

what stretch of river are you headed to??

i usually go 6crossings to Ross and still quite a few canoes. not horrifying though.

I believe Slabtown to Rich's Last Resort. Went the same weekend last year and only saw one group on the water besides ours. Rich's was kind enough to get our group off a good 45 minutes before the group behind. Fraternity party  .

Rich has sold his place and retired- having trouble with his back. Got a fishing trip pending with him now that he has the time-great guy

A buzzbait would compliment your Sneaky Pete's and some natural colored grubs should produce at that time of year.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
