minnowhooker Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 I have a hand held GPS but to have it guide you to a waypoint you need to be moving about 2 to 3mph. Is it the same with the Hummingbird or Lowrance GPS depth finder combos or will they guide you to a waypoint at a slower speed? Thinking about buying one but the handheld still works if you can troll slower and still get a good reading to a waypoint that might seal the deal. Any replys would be help.

My Lowrance works at any speed but, if I am drifting or working around a brush pile real slowly, the arrow that represents the boat my be turned the wrong direction... as soon as I move a couple of boat lengths everything straightens out... A GPS can only tell where you were the last time it "updates" ..... Most of the marine units update at a minimum of once per second... Some (less expensive unit) will only update once a minute..... Plus, the more satellites that the unit can receive ( at once ) the shorter of movements can be plotted..... If you go to the Lowrance site they have good information on how the GPS works and why it won't work...... GPS INFO "Look up OPTIMIST in the dictionary - there is a picture of a fishing boat being launched"
minnowhooker Posted June 4, 2010 Author Posted June 4, 2010 Thanks for the help. I had a Lowrance up front, it was laying face down with the face cover on and I got caught in a thunderstorm Sunday and everything got soaked. Went fishing Tuesday turned it on worked for a few seconds the screen flashed then went blank. Then I noticed water seeping out the bottom of the screen. Long story short it was almost 2 months out of warranty having dealt with Lowrance last year that was not the way to go. Took it back to Bass Pro the new guy at first did not want to help me in his defense did not want to get into trouble but his boss showed up and immediately let me apply what I a gave for it aganist a new one which is all I wanted Kudos to them. Moral of story if you have a newer Lowrance keep it dry.
Members jigfisherx Posted June 4, 2010 Members Posted June 4, 2010 I use my hummingbird 787 to troll for spoonbill at about 1mph with good luck. Have not tried it with the electric motor but can get lower mph while drifting. I agree about having to be moving to give the chart a direction to show.
