ozark trout fisher Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 I just purchased a Montague Leaping Brook Bamboo fly rod (9') for $75. The rod appears to be in fishable condition, with just a bit of damage on one of the ferrules and normal signs of wear and tear. It was pretty cheap, and I figured I didn't have a lot to lose. I'm not expecting a high quality fly rod for that amount of money, but has anyone used or heard anything about this make, and is it at least usable?

Your best bet would probably be to call or drop by Hargrove's tomorrow. I imagine Tom would be able to tell you more about it, and what repairs (if any) are necessary. Sounds like a nice rod though, have fun with it! <{{{><

Yeah, I'm looking forward to playing around with it a little. It will probably never replace my graphite St. Croix as my primary fishing rod, but it will be nice to have around anyway. I'm going to take it down to the Current next week and see how it does.
drew03cmc Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 With a 9' cane rod, you are looking at a 7wt, maybe a heavy 6. You will also need a boat anchor reel to balance that stick at all. Something around 8.5-9 ounces would do the trick. Montague made great rods, but most were looked upon as complete crap because a few of their rods were junk. Could you post some pictures of the rod? What reel did you plan to fish with it? Don't rush the casting stroke with this rod and you will be pleased with it. Andy

I'm not sure what reel I'm going to go with to be honest-I haven't quite figured that out or what line I'm going to be using. Thanks for the tips, hopefully it'll be a nice rod, if not, oh well.
ozark trout fisher Posted June 7, 2010 Author Posted June 7, 2010 I got it in the mail today. It's a beautiful rod, I just can't get over it. It casts very well with a 6 weight line. I couldn't be more happy with it, it really is an awesome fly rod.
Brian K. Shaffer Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 You might even try a DT5 and really get that rod workin'! have fun with it - but treat her gently Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
