rcguy Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Anyone tried these at Bennett? What color would you get?? I like Furled leaders I got at Weavers just OK. They do not have the ring at the end and makes it a little difficult to replace the tippet. See link below. http://www.thesimontons.com/Fishinggear.html
NoLuck Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Jerry, I don't know about them much but Feather-Craft has the ones I use all the time. They have the small tippet ring too. Order them online at thier website or just let me know what you need and I'll pick up what you want and send it to you and you can pay me when you see me next. Rich

I have used Troy's leaders and they work great. I don't think the color matters much. Send him a PM if you want more info. His OAF forum name is KSBASS. Cheers. PC
rcguy Posted June 8, 2010 Author Posted June 8, 2010 PC, I got an email form Troy this morning. He is fishing Bennett now. NoLuck got me turned on to furled leaders and now I'm hooked. Troy is suggesting a thread based leader in his email. I might just send send Emma a check for a couple. Jerry

NoLuck Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Hey Jerry, I think for dry flys thread leaders are great. You in my opinion won't care for them fishing nymphs and other below surface flys. Just make sure you treat the thread with some floatant. Rich
rcguy Posted June 8, 2010 Author Posted June 8, 2010 Thanks Rich, Are the feathercraft ones mono? They don't say.
NoLuck Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Jerry, they are mono yes. They also have a flouro one too with a bright pink section that you can use as an indicator.
FlyFishinFool Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 I have used the furled leaders from Feathercraft while fishing down at BSSP for several years. The mono leaders are durable and will float (for the most part) as the leader captures and holds air bubbles when cast - if you really smack it down on the water it will gradually sink. The furled leaders made from fluoro are designed to sink - Feathercraft offers them with or without a bright colored tip for nymphing. All FC furled leaders can be had with either tippet rings or a micro-swivel for stripping flys. I highly recommend the micro tippet rings - they make adding/changing tippet a breeze. I have not tried the furled leaders from the Simontons, but have emailed back and forth with Troy about their products. Troy seems very knowledgable regarding furled leaders, and I have already sent him a check to try out a couple of his leaders. I will test them out at BSSP later this month. Note that Troy's furled leaders are almost half the cost of the Feathercraft ones. FC wants $12.95 per leader, while Troy's prices vary depending on the material and length of furled leader. I am planning on trying out the Simonton's furled leaders made fromn the SpiderWire - they float, have no stretch and should be ultra-strong! The SpiderWire furled leaders are the most expensive and still run only $8-$9, a lot less than FC. I will post comments/results when I have tested the Simonton's furled leaders. * ´¯`•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((((º> `•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((º> .¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((((º> I look in my fly box and think about what should guide my choice of the best fly: the amount/angle of sun on the water, the water temp & clarity, what bugs are hatching, what the fish might be eating, and what worked last time. Then I remember what an old man told me... " Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown, fuzzy, about 1/2 inch long and underwater."
jah Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 I am using one of Troy's furled leaders and I love it! I almost exclusively nymph fish, and even though I have one of his floating furled leaders, I have caught more fish in my last 2 outings than my previous 10 combined. It is so easy to untangle bird's nests, change tippet, etc. I cannot believe how I have fished without them. I was skeptical about nymphing with them and spooking fish, but, like I said, I have been doing very well on the Current with them. I use a thingamabobber and it hooks perfectly to the furled leader and NEVER slips or kinks the line. My wife is mad that I don't have one on hers, but I have 5 more mono leaders to go through before she gets a furled leader--I bought them before I knew how much I would like a furled one, so now we (she) has to use them up.
