About ten years ago I bought a Pakboat 150T folding canoe. I bought it because you can actually ship these things UPS--the whole thing fits into a big duffle bag--to wherever you want to be using it, like up in Alaska, then fly to the location, pick up your canoe, put it together (takes about a half hour) and you're good to go. Even used to be able to check it as baggage on the plane if you wanted to go that route--still could, but now you probably would have to pay a little extra for it, because the whole thing weighs a little more than 50 pounds.

As it turns out, I didn't use it hardly at all. I think I used it once or twice on road trips out West, and that's about it. It has set in my basement, dry, cool, and dark, ever since I bought it.

These things have a "skin" made out of the same heavy duty stuff that good quality rafts are made of. It has aluminum ribs that you put together with thwarts and longitudinal braces, along with two seats that attach to the ribs. You stretch the skin over the frame and you're ready to go.

The canoe is 15 feet long. You can configure it either as a solo with one seat in the middle or as a tandem with seats near the ends. It also has two sets of ribs, one of which makes the canoe about three inches wider, for use as a tandem, while the other is narrower for solo use.

It paddles very well as a solo. If using it as a tandem, it actually paddles better and feels less tippy if you can put a pretty good load in the middle. It flexes to an extent, and putting stuff in the middle makes the center portion sit a little deeper in the water. It feels a little strange when you first climb into it, but you soon get used to it.

These things retail for almost $2000. I'm wanting to sell mine, and I'm asking $700 for it. It's a specialty type of craft but if you do a lot of traveling it might be something you'd want. It's still in great condition, just a little bit of wear at one point where the skin rubs against the frame, above the waterline. You can see these things at www.pakboats.com
