flyfishmaster Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Well I finally got to fish at BSSP for the first time since January. I was surprised how small the crowd was for the weekend. I fished in Zone 2 "High Bank" area for most the trip. I took my brother in law and it was his first trout fishing ,plus his first time to use a fly rod. He did okay for his first time out. I think he was able to land 12, but he missed a lot as well. okay here the report. The water was the clearest I have fished in years and the flow was perfect. I have read older reports indicating the total number of fish in the stream is down.... I have to agree with that statement. The number was down but I was still able to catch a good number of fish. In the 12 hours of fishing we had over the two days (we did not start fishing until after 9 AM each day)I landed well over 50 fishing and a bunch more LDRs. I was surprised how many fish I was able to catch in water less than 8" deep, they were really hang behind the bigger rocks and willing to take my nymphs. I ran a double rig most of the day using 7x fluorocarbon. I was changing flies a lot through out the day but I cannot say any one flies was better or stood out. The only consistency was size 20 or smaller caught 90% of our fish. Over all it was great weather and a good time. I hope I can get back down there soon. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!

flyfishmaster Posted July 20, 2010 Author Posted July 20, 2010 I forgot to mention that when we got to the park on Saturday morning, there was a guy at the store weighting in a 11 ¼ pound Brown trout. He said he caught it on the upstream side of the entrance arch bridge. That was one big fish. I have not looked to see if there are any photos of it out on some website. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!

stlfisher Posted July 21, 2010 Posted July 21, 2010 Sounds like a good day. I had considered Bennett on Saturday, but ended up on the Current instead. Good to hear the fishing went well.
rcguy Posted July 21, 2010 Posted July 21, 2010 I fished Monday and Tuesday this week. Not super hot action for me. I caught some on differnet color midges. Zebra and olive seemed best. Also caught a few on an sz18 peach glowball with a bead head. For some reason they seemed to prefer it when dropped from a midge. John Deere produced nothing for me in several locations. Monday late evening I got several takers on sz22 white Midge dry fly up by the Gauge house. Tuesday down in zone 2, by the rock hole, I caught several with a zebra Midge I tied with a few wraps of of hot pink at the bead...size 18. Tuesday morning I ran into FlyFishnFool up at the island a we had a good visit and landed a few fish. He had best luck on olive and dark brown midges and I had best luck on the small peach glowball again. I did catch a few on midges though. Again NO takers on the John Deere that I ha done so well on 3 weeks ago! Go figure, stupid fish. BTW, it was hot! Once in the stream it as not bad but getting the gear on was a bear!
flyfishmaster Posted July 21, 2010 Author Posted July 21, 2010 RC, I had the same issue, the zebra midges (black, rust, olive and red) just did not produce like past trips over the years. What up with that Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
DoveTail Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 I don't know how "trout park" fish can get educated so fast as they are just released from the hatchery, but they change with the pressure from previous years and they need a new fly they haven't seen. It is hot for a while, then it doesn't produce.
