Members jimf1969 Posted August 1, 2010 Members Posted August 1, 2010 First off let me start be thanking all the folks that help me over the past few weeks, with my other topic, ( new to Taney, need a little help ) info was good and all was appreciated . I did leave my 5 year old boy at home this time to do some scouting and to see if it would work for us. I got down there Friday the 23, it was late when i got there about 10 pm. It was dark, foggy and a bit intimidating to the first timer. I have never tried to fish for trout in the dark before, so , I am not too good at it. ( still loved every minute of it ) I can see why y'all get so much out of it. After an hour or so i had to find a motel. I did, and was back at it Saturday morn 5:30 am. The fog was intense, and, I got to admit I got a bit cold. You see , I don't own waders, so , I do the wading with shorts and shoes. Shorts, shoes and in the dark my feet get so cold they hurt. I did not do much fishing till bout 9 am. I caught 7 trout from 9 till noon, then they turned on the water. time to go to the motel. to warm up, eat, and nap. I was back by 4:30 or so, I started fishing on the stairs at the water inlet #2. I caught 3 about a pound and a half or so on my spinning rod , ( I know some ya think less of us that use the dreaded spinning reel) but I didn't have much room for the back cast. ( and I am still learning the fine art of the fly rod ). Anyway, back to the trout, I hooked what I believe to be the largest trout I have ever hooked . She took a gray hares ear size 20, and in no time had spooled my spinning reel of about 95% of the line before the hook came out. ( best minute or so of the year for me ). I wish she would have jumped or something so I could have had a face to go with the adrenaline I felt when she stripped me bare. Sunday was about the same for me 5 or so fish by 10 am then I helped a guy how had fallen into the water by the re bar hole up and out of the water, It okay Jerry it happens to the best of us. in fact it happened to me just 10 minutes later.I know how you feel. Before I left I meet some good folks down there, JDC looks like you are getting the hang of tying them scuds. I also met someone that simply called himself Duffy, I truly believe that if given enough time and money he would teach the world to fly fish and supply them with equipment to do so. Men like him are few and far between. Thanks for everything Duff. To sum it up. I LOVED IT. ALL OF IT. THE GOOD. THE BAD. THE UGLY. In the immortal words of Arnold Schwarzenegger. I WILL BE BACK. With my son, daughter and wife. My son and I will fish while my wife and daughter shop do what they do just a few miles down the road. If mama aint happy aint nobody happy. Hope to see y'all soon. Brian K. Shaffer Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Glad to hear you had a good time and caught some fish. (even if you did take dip in the water) One thing you can do is wear wool socks.. or even neoprene booties. It will help when wet wading. Duffy is a one of a kind. What a guy... he'll give a kid a full set-up rig to fish with ... just because he saw the desire to learn from the youngster and the joy he gets in is own heart. And he won't take a dime for his time, teaching, and genuine helpfulness. I admire his fishing style too... he likes the small stuff.. 22-24-26-28 and sometimes 30's. Yep... 30's. I tied 3 nights last week and was feeling pretty good about myself. I got to wet a few yesterday and did pretty well. I caught my first Brown and also my first 20"+ along with about 6 other fish yesterday afternoon. All of which were on my own flies! It is funny you mention the scuds though. I had a couple that didn't stand up to the abuse so well. Will have to find a recipe online for review. I was hoping to catch up with Duffy so he could show me what I was doing wrong. He truly is one of a kind. He has taught me so much and I love hearing his stories about sending kids home with complete outfits. I am keeping my eyes open for good deals in that not so secret place I told you to scope out waders on rods reels or line to pickup on the cheap and forward on to Duffy so he can give another kid or two a rig, because like Brain said he sure won't take a dime of money for all of his time and help. Hope you make it back soon! I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
