troutfiend1985 Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 Went down on Monday arrived at 9:30. The stream was in great shape with active fish. I have been bashing Bennett lately and this was my first time down in about a year. The stream was fishin as well as I can remember. Light Cahills, Tan Caddis and Grasshoppers where the top dry flies for me. I also had cgood luck stripping Cracklebacks and small streamers. The weather was hot but the fishing was worth it. Tried a dropper off of the Grasshopper but had no luck with it. I had some real fun with a huge hopper. I would get some big fish up to look at it but little luck with it. The fish were big and healthy. “The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people” J. Brandeis
rcguy Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 Thanks for the report!. What hopper pattern does well for you? I've never fished one at Bennett.

And I can always throw a bobwhite or mini jig under a nice foam hopper. To bad the best time to fish hoppers are the hottest parts of the year. Since I camp out I try an avoid the warmer days. troutfiend1985 Posted August 6, 2010 Author Posted August 6, 2010 Anything can work well there. Something in the 8-10 size range will work well. PMX and Stimulators work well. I was fishing with a hopper pattern that I hadn't tied, I think it was a Rainy's pattern. Grand hoppers work well. I was noticing that I had looks from bigger fish from the larger hopper and more strikes from the smaller one(size 12) I was wondering if anyone had any luck on nymphs at bennett lately. “The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people” J. rcguy Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 Size 18 and 20 Midges, Zebra Midge and Olive Midge have been good for me in different areas. Midge under a small egg pattern is sweet many times.
Members jimf1969 Posted August 8, 2010 Members Posted August 8, 2010 I hear you guys talking about using a dropper at Bennett, I didn't think we could use two hooks there. (Midge under a hopper). Have I been wrong all this time? Jim F All the romance of trout fishing exists in the mind of the angler and is in no way shared by the fish. ~Harold F. Blaisdell,

Have I been wrong all this time? Jim F Yes you were wrong. You can use multiple hooks as long as its on 1 line and each hook is a single hook. It's been hashed over and over here and its perfectly legal. Most people just don't know how to interpret the rules. It does get kind of gray though but most of us that fish Bennett and Montauk on a regular basis use a dropper on occasion.
