Cocry Posted August 21, 2010 Posted August 21, 2010 I was wanting to start making my own jigs. I am wanting something in the range of a sizes 18-22 with a small jig head. Any idea if anyone produces anything of this nature or anyone that actually takes orders for custom designs? Thanks in advance! Cory

Blue Ribbon Flies in Mountain Home is selling tiny little jigs in that size range. They may be a little bigger like size 16-12. Of course they are not selling molds, just the jigs. They run somewhere around 1/100 to 1/60 of an ounce. Otherwise check with Janns Net Craft or Stamina Products. A Google search should get you to their web sites. Cocry Posted August 21, 2010 Author Posted August 21, 2010 Gracias mi amigo. It seems like it might be a boring winter so I'm trying to get into a few hobbies.

I would imagine you will eventually buy a vise and start tying hair jigs and feather jigs as I did. Eventually that will lead to fly tying, and if you're not already into it, fly fishing. It's a long expensive road but well worth it. Good luck to you. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
Cocry Posted August 22, 2010 Author Posted August 22, 2010 yea i've been fly fishing for about 6 or 7 years. just started tying jigs around 2 weeks ago. the coolest thing ever to tie something and actually catch fish with it.
Terry Beeson Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 Honestly, I doubt you are prepared to pay for a custom mold like you are describing. There are many machine shops that can make one for you, but they are expensive. Find someone who already has one and buy your jigs from them. Or, contact a fly shop and places like Fin and Feather that stock molds to see if they have the jig heads. I'm thinking I may have to buy a Bridgeport Mill and make my own molds. Anybody got a used but decent Bridgeport laying around they want to get rid of cheap???? Anybody got a Bridgeport that wants to get into the jig mold business???? There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

If you're familiar with prices, is it possible for you to post them on here so I can make a decision to look into it further?

Janns Netcraft has blank molds that allow you to machine to your specks for $31.39 each. The smallest round head molds they have is 1/64" and cost $38.99 for two molds. These come with 4 different sizes in each mold. Check out Janns Netcraft molds here. You can check out Stamina molds here. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
Rolan Duffield Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 The problem with the small jigs is the width of the hook gap. It's too small in the smaller jigs and that hampers getting a clean hook set. The problem relates to the height of the jig hook eye which is about the same height as the barb height. The best hook i've found is the Mustad #32750 in gold, size 10. Any hook smaller than that is questionable for a satisfactory hook gap because of the eye height in relation to the barb height. The gap width of this hook is .0350. Most of the smaller hook gap sizes ranges from .195 to .270 The Mustad #32751 bronze is a similar hook to the #32750 though this is a very soft hook that bends easily. This is the hook I believe many of the current micro jigs use. Does anyone know of a size 12 or smaller jig hook with a satisfactory hook gap? Rolan
