jah Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 A friend of mine and I fished Saturday from about 9 am until about 7 pm. We started at Baptist Camp and played "dodge the canoe" for 2 hours. It was slow at first, but we got into a few at the first deep hole. It's tough NOT to get into a few there. I had two on Prince nymphs and one on an olive wooly worm as my bottom fly. Things got better as we moved downstream, but the fishing was very odd. We'd catch 3 immediately, then go an hour and not catch anything, and back again to 3 in a row. We ate lunch back at the car at 3 then headed to Tan Vat. We knocked them dead above the swimming hole where there are downed trees. That's fast becoming my favorite spot. TONS of fish could be seen just holding there. I did foul hook a 21 inch brown. I didn't realize he was foul hooked until near the end. I have never had a fish fight like this, and I thought he may be foul hooked because when they are, they fight. But he kept showing me his head, so I thought it was legit until he got almost to the net. I felt awful then that I fought him for so long. I am happy to say he revived quickly and swam away very rapidly. It was the largest fish I have ever "caught" in the Current, too bad it wasn't legit. The swimming hole gave up a few fish, also, despite 3 young boy's best efforts to scare them away. And at about 6:30 my friend destroyed them below the swimming hole on a black stonefly. He couldn't keep them off the hook. The day ended in perfect fashion for me---a rainbow darted up out of nowhere and took my Hopper. Love dry fly fishing! Tried it all day and had nothing until my second to last cast. I also saw my very first river otter, so that was cool. Water was lower than I thought it would be and gin clear. Mayflies were hatching all day, and I only saw a few caddis.
3wt Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 I'm quickly beginning to loathe all of you people that are finding time to fish. And as much as I like seeing the otters, they are pretty much death to fish populations. Hope that this doesn't become a trend. What black stone pattern was your friend using? The pat's rubberleg thing? I keep hearing about people killing em with stonefly nymphs, but haven't had a chance to try.

It wasn't a Pat's, but I did catch one on a Pats. If you fish just below the "waterfall" below the swimming hole, tie on a big stonefly pattern (Pats or others). I catch loads of fish there, and mostly on stones fish along the bottom. He's so excited that he just ordered a dozen more from Big Y Fly. Just be careful. I think there's a shipwreck in that deep hole! Something is down there that I kept getting snagged on. I lost 8 flies in 10 minutes. No joke.
stlfisher Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 I have lost many flies in that section as well...all kinds of something in that stretch. I like fishing the swimming hole swimmers or not. I think the swimmers stir up the bottom and make for easy fishing. I think the fish get used to people so they aren't to spooky. There are a lot of fish in that hole.

You're right, the swimming hole is loaded with fish. My first cast I had one on that had massive shoulders. He started stripping line before I realized he was even on. Being far smarter than me, he was off before I blinked. Then I caught a bunch aof dinkers. He wouldn't bite again!
flyfishmaster Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 jah, like 3wt said... I loathe all of you. I sure hope I can take part of this action soon. All of the good reports are getting fired up. Hope to see you on the river one of these days. Great report. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
Members jmarco21 Posted August 27, 2010 Members Posted August 27, 2010 Ya, been a horrible year for me too to get out and do some fishing. I fit a whole 4 hours in this entire year back in April (otherwise rained too much that weekend) and have been cooped up ever since. Oct 8th is on the way though and I got the time off work cleared already - figured I stop buy and tease myself with a solid fishing report from the Current River. Nice to see there's still life out there.
