Members Scott Samuels Posted June 23, 2006 Members Posted June 23, 2006 Can someone give this fly fishing newbie advice on how to fish other areas below the darn other than below chute 2? I have been catching quite a few fish using scuds below chute 2, but when I move to different locations I stink. Any advice on techniqes, flys etc. would be appreciated. Scott
motroutbum Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 yeah.....go to any other faster moving water and do the same thing There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!
Micheal Kyle Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Scott, Everyone has to start somewhere and they usually pick the outlets because of the high concentration of fish around them. Scuds and sowbugs are a great fly however with the number of scuds and sowbugs on the downward side if you chose to fish then make them large 12-14 in size and tan grey and olive in color. Put plenty of weight on them so they will sink fast and get to the bottom since that where they love to hang out on the rocks. If I could point you in the right direction I would have to say go east young man lot of fish. Two spots or maybe three Big hole, roking chair and KOA. Those are all down stream The big hole is where the rebar empties and the roking chair is where the big hole empties and the koa is in front of the old campground. There are a couple of recomended flies that I would suggest and I would use them religiously they are midges and sculpins and a few dries. The midges would be the zebra, ice cream cone, BWO ice breaker those are three midges that are great. The colors that I would recomend would be black, gray, tan, green and blue. The ice cream cone is red or tan with a white bead on top. One other fly that works great is the crakle back, Most people fish them dry but I don't. Cast them out there and strip them back with no indicator. The crakle backs that I like are the yellow and the olive in a size 12. Next are the sculpins those are bait fish that are all over in the trophy area any where from a size 8 to a size 2 will catch fish during the day. Tan and olives ones work the best. You will fish them the same way as the crackle back. Some other flies that will work are the san juan worm red and browns, eggs any color but peach works the best for me. This would not be compleat if I did not mention the Mohair Leech in a size 10-12 in solid colors like browns and olive will work really good. I hope that has helped you out, do not be afraid to ask any question there are no stupid questions when it comes to this subject. Fly fishing has two sides very confussing or very relaxing. And I dont care how long any one has fly fishied we all know there are days where you just want to give it all up and quit. So with that said good luck Michael To Know People Is To Know Thier Ways!

Wayne SW/MO Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Try fishing the Rebar chute and the holes below it. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Members Jeff House Posted July 1, 2006 Members Posted July 1, 2006 Try sight fishing the edges with the same small scud patterns that are productive for you in the outlet area. I find that the fish along the edges in the shallow water are almost always staking scuds. I usually fish a size #20 or #22 scud with no weight and half a palsa indicator set about three times the depth of the water being fished. This can be a really productive method and it's also a lot of fun sight fishing to some of Taney's trophy fish. I generally try to stand on the bank and stay out of the water when possible also, this keeps the fish in their natural feeding lies and not at your feet.
