Heading down to Montauk for my first time ever. I'm hoping Bennett doesn't catch wind of this or she will be pissed. Anyone planning on being down there next weekend that would want to show me the ropes of the place? Tying up a few different flies to try bc I'm just unfamiliar with the area. Really wanting to try the current as well. I'm going to try to leave Saturday around 5 or 6am. If anyone is wanting to go down from the STL area, let me know.

Ill be down there and id be glad to show you some things in the afternoon after my meeting on saturday if you will be down that way. The st.louis chapter of the mtfa is having a derby so i need to be there as a state officer and a st.louis officer. The meeting is at 1pm but im free after that :) There will be tagged fish (gill clips) for prizes. Its a great time and alot of fun!

I was planning on coming down. After 10pointer mentioned the derby I am having second thoughts. In my opinion fishing with a derby going on gets quite frantic (nothing personal 10pointer, just my expeirence). If you go Cocry, just go with the flow and try to imagine fishing with about half of the number of fisherman that will be there. I will say you can learn alot from some guys just by watching them and 10pointer sounds like one of them. If you have a trout stamp go down river outside the park and practice some flyfishing. It is a little tougher but good expeirence to get a feel for the terrian. TanVat or Baptist Camp too. In my opinion Montauk is the best of the 4 state park fisheries.

I totally agree. I'm a BSSP "homer" but would much rather hit Montauk anytime. :o

I wouldnt be too worried about any real big crowds...this derby only has around 175 or so people entered usually so its not too noticable....now if it was the Rose Holland (first weekend of oct) thats a different story all together thats where you get the whole park packed and it gets pretty crazy. I wouldnt think the park will be too crowded this coming weekend as alot of people have been down this weekend for the holiday.

And I definitely second the fishing outside the park, I rarely spend anytime in the park. The wire at the end of the park on down to baptist camp is my favorite stretch.

Im actually heading down to the park here in a few hours for a day trip. Ill let you all know how the park and outside the park is fishin :D

Thanks for the tips! I'm planning on fishing the current mostly. Just maybe dabble in the park... all of this of course if the rain holds off

Don't let the rain discourage you. Some of my most productive days fishing the Current have come during and after rain. Just be aware of any lightning and watch for flash flooding during the heavy stuff.

It's the truth. The best fishing is almost always in the rain- not just on the Current River, but on just about any trout stream I've ever fished.

The nastier the weather the better the fishing is generally.

I agree with Ozark and Trout Bum about bad weather fishing. I slayed them earlier this year at Bennett in an ice storm.

Forecast shows rain for this weekend.....see you down there.
