I am new to trout fishing with a fly rod. I just bought a 7'6" 3wt Cabelas rod with a Scientific Anglers 2m35 reel with 3wt line on it.

I am going down next month or the beginning of August to try RR with the long rod.

I would like to spend the morning catching fish, then try the afternoon to try my hand at something a little bigger than just a regular size stocker.

I read somewhere that the size of fish is better below the park in zone 3 all the way to Table Rock, if this is true, how do I access this area of the stream? Please help me out here! THank you!

You are right there are some good fish down below the Zone 2 area of Roaring River, the natural bait area always holds a few nice browns, and a good rainbow or two. The area below the park fishes well, but not a lot of fish, in august the river will be very low and this actually helps you find the bigger fish, there are very few deep holes left on Roaring in august, and any sizeable hole will hold a fish or two, and sometimes more, the conservation dept. stocks down to Curry bridge once a month, so there are always a few fish around. I have caught most of my big fish below the park on bigger woolybuggers and I did catch an 11 pound rainbow a few years ago in the winter around the Muncy cemetary area, on a san juan worm, so you never know what they will hit, but the lower area is full of minnows and crawfish, so the fish don't want for food, and lots of sculpins also, I never see much topwater action but hoppers and beetles will pull a good fish up sometimes, prepare for a lot of walking and you need to be quite and wear low vis clothing, this will help in august. Holler if you need more info, I can help you find the roads into this area. timsfly@hotmail.com e-mail me here for more info, good luck.

I will be by during my day at the park in July or early August. As far as a rod, would a 7.5' 3wt be sufficient for in this area? I just picked one up and it casts wonderfully. I will definitely be in to see if we can find those roads to the lower river. Thanks Tim.

A 7.5' 3wt will be great for the early morning trico hatches, fishing the upper pools and catch and release areas but the lower part of the river is little wider and a 3wt for me is a little light in the britches…I assume you are fishing a double taper with a 3wt so the afternoon winds will not be your friend. If I was going to fish one rod for RR river I would use a 8’ 4wt with weight forward line. That would be my recommendation and worth what you paid for it. If you want real good help stop in at Tim's Fly Shop, Tim knows RR inside and out and has forgot more about fishing RR than I will ever know.

I cut my teeth fly fishing RR 30 years ago this summer with a 5/6wt fiberglass rod and a Martin automatic reel.
