This weekend was absolutely beautiful. The Current river is one of the most scenic rivers is the state. Our family spent the weekend floating and swimming and generally enjoying the summer.

As to the fishing, the fish that I caught this weekend ran smaller that the last 2 trips that I reported. Most fish caught were 11" - 13". I did catch a fair number of fish for the time spent fishing.

Saturday morning, I fished from 6:00 am until about 10:00 am and caught 16 SMB w/ 7 fish over the 12" length limit. All released. None of the fish were larger than 13". Most were caught on soft plastics, w/ a few caught on crank baits.

A notable mention, in the lower end of a hole, I saw a couple of pickerel hanging out around a beaver den, I spooked them and was unable to entice a bite.

Saturday pm. - while my family was tubing, I managed to motor down stream ahead of them and caught 6 nice smallies in one hole of water.

Sunday, same time, I motored up to the hole that I had caught the 6 fish the evening before, and immediately started catching fish. I fished this hole for 2 hours, and caught 18 fish all between 11" & 13" and all on soft plastics. I went back to the location that I saw the pickerel the day before and caught one and had a couple of follows on a Rapala. The fish that I caught measured about 18" These are fun fish to catch.

Monday, same time, Motored down river and caught 12 fish w/ 1 fish 16 1/2" and another 14" the rest were 11" - 13" all on the soft plastics, and a few on the rapala. I went back to the location where I released the pickerel the day before, and tried to entice another strike w/o success. I had several small fish follow, but no takers.

Monday afternoon. we pulled over to eat lunch, and while the others were relaxing in the shade, I caught 7 fish in a chunk rock run across from the river from where the kids were swimming. Each time I got hooked up, I let one of the kids real in the fish. They had a blast.

Tuesday, I was only able to fish about an hour and caught 6 fish 11" - 13"

All in all, a great weekend catching over 65 SMB several Goggleye, and a pickerel. The fish were small, but even the smallest smallmouth bass put up a great fight in the flow of the stream.

Kicknbass,

Thanks for the report.I recently rented a campsite for the summer in the Deer Run area, and hope to get into some good smallmouth fishing. We,(my wife, grandson and I)were there last weekend as well. The river traffic around Deer Run was very heavy.Though it was 4th of July weekend. We didn't get much fishing in.I am not familiar with this area at all.How far above Deer Run Campground would I have to go to get out of all the floater traffic and into the smallmouth. Thanks again for the fishing report.

I'm not sure were Deer Run is, but I believe, Van Burean. If so, you'll need to get above the put in at Waymeyer to get above the canoes and tubes.
