I have caught Plenty of trout there in the 10# range, most of them on private land above the dam If fishins a sport, then I'm an athlete.
mhall02
10 pounds? Wow, I have never seen anything pulled out of there bigger than maybe two pounds at the most, but I haven't fished it since the early 90s. The fish your describing would eat most of what I used to catch (dinky silver bullets from Neosho FH). I walked up from the dam a couple of times but didn't find any deep water after about 1/2 to 3/4 mile or so, where do these big boys hide? The water seemed to get kinda warm after I passed the first spring. I have caught some nice smallmouth from the second bridge on down to where it flows into Shoal, but no big trout. I would like to hear more on this subject as well.
timsfly
I saw a pic of a brown a few years ago that the guy told me weighed 13 pounds and he told me it came out of Capps creek up by the mill, the biggest brown I have ever caught out of there was about 6 pounds and I caught it down a mile or so below the Mill. Members hawgslayer
all of the big trout that i have caught were on the first bit private land up from the mill where they are rarely fished for. so they pretty much grow up in isolation. and i wouldnt be surprised if a lot of them were washed down from the hillcreek lodge where they were fed. but to catch one just get permission to fish the land and fish the shallow to deep pools about 30 minutes before dark but keep fishing well into the night. i'd say you cuold fish anywhere from the dam to the hillcreek lodge and catch lunkers if you just fish the right spots. If fishins a sport, then I'm an athlete.
timsfly
I have seen some bigger fish in the lake above the dam, but the creek on the hill creek lodge land doesn't run into capps creek, it runs into shoal creek, I have fished there many times, so I doubt many of them make it back into capps creek, let alone how would they get above the dam ? But you are right the fish above the lake get fished for very little, I have fished it a few times and it is so brushy it would be better fished with a spinning rod. Members hawgslayer
thanks for the correction tim. if you fsh from the first bridge above the dam to the second bridge above the dam theres a pretty good chance youll catch a lunker. and fish after dark thats when the lunkers really start to move. and tim you were right fishing with a spincast reel is more efective and use minnows as bait becuase the trout love um If fishins a sport, then I'm an athlete.
