Well I finally got away from work for a little while and made it down to the river today to fish. I fished from 3pm to 6pm. The weather was great. It was a little warm but nothing like it has been.In the three hours that I fished I caught probably 25 to 30 fish, and broke off probably another dozen. I know, I know, that is a lot of break offs. I will tell you why the break offs were so plentiful and I only have one thing to say. 8x I fished with 7x for the first 20 to 30 minutes with lots of lookers but no takers. I switched to 8x and the game was on. The best rule, which I failed to follow today is re-tie after every fish with 8x. I fished mainly black ants with both grizzly hackle and black hackle. I had taken a friend with me and he used some other stuff but the ants were by far the best producers.

I've never had the guts to fish 8X. I break off enough at Taney with 7X. If the fish are line shy when I get to RR on 07/29 I'll keep 8X in mind.

Thanks, Don

I caught you a delicious bass.

Don I'm with you. I have never had the guts to fish 8X either. I fish 7X about 90% of the time at Taneycomo, Bennett, RR, and Montauk but have never felt the need to go to 8X. But given RRV's experience I may have to get some and try it when things are slow.

8X made a big difference last night, had to use a #30 glo-ball and 8X just to get them to look, but after the sun went down a bit, I was able to go back to 7X and a green/grizzly ant and caught a bunch. I don't break off a lot with 8X but I'm using my 1 weight or my 5' 3wt fiberglass winston, and these are real soft, great for using the light tippet, I have some 10X and 12X also but it is too small for me, but there are a few brave souls that use once in awhile. Fishing was great at the park last night, but the water is low and light tippet is a must, good luck.

Good info Tim,I stopped in your fly shop last friday to get some info about an old fly rod and reel that belonged to my dad.I have done every other kind of fishing except fly,so I'm gonna give it a try.You weren't there but I got by on what I've read on here, and did manage to catch some fish after I finally started setting the hook the right way.You have a great little shop, everyone needs to see the picture of you holding that huge 16 pounder!!
