Good Afternoon All,

I have a Cabela's Prestige Plus Reel and spare spool that I received as a gift for Christmas. The reel is set up for 5-6-7 wt line. Does anyone know who makes these reels and what quality they are?

I have yet to fish with it as I have been using my G Loomis Venture 5. I was really wondering about the quaility, but reviews were really good on sights that I checked. I am looking for a reel for my 4wt Orvis Clearwater and would consider trade offers for a 4 wt reel.

The older Prestige reels were made by Okuma, in fact the spools are interchangable. Not sure about the Prestige Plus but it's probably also made by Okuma.

They are pretty decent reels for the money. I've used them for years with no problem.

I have one on my loomis 5 wgt and like it very well.

I just purchased a 9 weight TFO cobalt titanium IMF fly rod 6 weight with Christrmas money and upgraded to the Cabellas RPS 6 premium reel and it is soo smoothe and easy to set the brake. All of the inside is sealed to prevent water problelms. I cant wait to get it to the stream to try out. Unfortunately everthing near me is frozem up.

Back to your question though for the money the prestige plus is a great reel. I have used it a lot for the last two years and am completely satisified.

Just use the reel you got on your 4wt rod. It won't make hardly any difference if you put the right line on it. I have a Battenkill 5wt with WF5 that I use on both my Sage 4wt and 6wts and a Crystal River 3wt with WF3 that I use on both too. When using the 4wt rod with bigger weighted flys I use the 3wt reel or the 5wt reel with 6wt rod, the heavier flys seem to balance out the lighter line. Just try it out first before trading or getting something else.

Dave is right Okuma makes the Prestige and Prestige Plus as well. Like the spools, parts are also interchangable.

I don't know about the prestige plus, but my girlfriend has a three forks fly reel, which is cheaper than the prestige plus model, and I was really impressed with it. It has a really nice little drag system and she's never had a problem with it. I would think that the prestige plus would be at least as good, and I wouldn't hesitate in trying it out.

Thanks Dano! I was looking through Okuma parts and do not see the spare spools yet. I plan on going to a fishing supply store that carries Okuma and seeing if they change. Many thanks

I agree with fly2fish - I would just use the reel on the rod and not worry about swapping reels. Like F2F I also put an Orvis BBS3 (5wt-7wt) on a 3wt rod (with 3FWF flyline) and it actually balances just fine. Getting a slightly smaller reel will probably save you less than 1/2oz of total weight. If the rod/reel balances OK then you just have a reel with a little extra backing capacity for your 4wt rod. Just make sure you load enough backing so the flyline will not be wound too tighly on the arbor.

I look in my fly box and think about what should guide my choice of the best fly: the amount/angle of sun on the water, the water temp & clarity, what bugs are hatching, what the fish might be eating, and what worked last time. Then I remember what an old man told me... " Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown, fuzzy, about 1/2 inch long and underwater."
