Andrew324 Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Going to be doing some paddling on the James this Saturday. Going to bring my fly rod, either my 8'6 5wt or my 9'0 6wt, can't decide. Going from the Dam to Delaware Town. Anybody have any advice on how to fly fish this? I have never fished for bass on a fly rod. Streamer and minnow patterns, mohair leeches, woolly buggers? Thanks! Danoinark Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Can't beat a Wooley Bugger for just about anything. Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Danimal Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I'd go with the 6# to better handle weighted flies or split-shot. Water's still pretty cold so you may need to fish somewhat deep. Might even want to use a sink-tip line if you have one. Hope this helps. Good Luck. Dan-o RELEASE THOSE BROWNIES!!
Hopper Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 I've had good success with #6 and #8 clousers yellow/white, orange/white, grey, white. work um slow so the lead eyes bounce the bottom and make clicking sounds. Gregg The gods do not deduct from man's allotted span the hours spent in fishing.
RSBreth Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 I use a little different tactic as far as streamers go - I want them lightly weighted so on a tight line they suspend and don't sink to the bottom. I work them over submerged timber in slower current areas. Basically mimicking a suspending jerkbait. If they wont hit that, then maybe I'll resort to dredging the bottom. Cluoser's tied with bath chain eyes are good for this - but hard to find commercially.
Andrew324 Posted February 25, 2011 Author Posted February 25, 2011 Thanks for all they advice everybody. Looks like I will be tying a few more clouser's tonight. I just plan on fishing off and on, but this trip is mostly myself and my assistant trip guide taking students paddling. RSBreth Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Ace Hardware sells bead chain by the foot in several different sizes Yes they do, but Clouser's tied commercially are hard to find tied with them. Like I said. If you tie your own, yeah, they're easily found.
