Wanting to buy my wife and fishing partner a new fly rod for our 24th wedding anniveristy. I have lookedat the fly girl rod made for mcgill and wright. Has a lifetime warranty and not a bad looking rod. What bothers me is that it is made in china. For the cost of that rod I could put her in a upper mid-priced St Croix, only doesn't come with a women's grip. Wanting to get some feedback on this rod by someone who has fished it, not a retailer who is selling it! Thinking maybe of having a rod built, can anyone point me in the right direction and give me some feedback.

Look at the Winston Joan Wulff model.

Just an idea, but c'mon on - 24 years is a long time.

Pony up the bucks and get her something really nice.

She will fish more.. that's for sure.

Well, here's my opinion, for whatever it's worth. Unless your wife is under 5 feet tall and weighs less than 90lbs, you don't need a "womens grip" I am 5'3" and 115 lbs, and a womens grip feels like the difference between driving with and without a steering wheel cover in your car. It's really just what you get used to. If I were her, I'd prefer you spend the money on a nice setup, period. If you're thinking that she'd prefer the womens grip, because she's a woman...I would venture to think that's silly. Your choices are definitely greater if your not trying to find something specifically made for women, just like waders. I DO think it's an awesome anniversary gift, though! Now if I could just get MY husband to fish...

My wife lori is an avid fly fisher, liscenced guide, and has taught several ladies fly fishing classes and fly casting classes. She fishes with the Winston Joan Wulff favorite and loves it. She is about five foot five and weight appropriate. She finds most grips too large. I bought her a nice sage and the sanded down the grip untill it fit her hand. This is an option. If you were to consider a custom rod look at the grip on the Joan Wulff favorite. It is awesome. Designed by the top female casting instructor in the world specifically for women. Need I say more.

Yes the Joan Wulff favorite has a great grip and is popular, I have sold a lot of them the past few years, your wife will always think it is to much money but I'm sure she would be proud to own and fish a rod of that high a quality, the st. croix rods are good but no where near the quality of the upper end winston rods, and the winston rods carry a great warranty, Unconditional for life of the origianl owner. But a sage is ok to, my wife likes the SP 8' 9" 6 pc sage, it is her favorite fly rod.

Bill I have guided fly fishermen and woman for more than 37 years for trout and have done many show's and casting Demon's all over the country. May I suggest there is no such thing as a ladies grip. I know ladies that can cast a 10' rod with a full Well's grip on it.LOL

I suggest you buy her an 8' 5wgt rod. We have found over the years that is one of the best sizes of rods for a lady. A lot of company's have different grips that you can choose from. If not you can have a good rod maker turn the grip down for her and it should not cost a lot to have done.

I have very large hands I can pick up a basketball with one hand but I like a small grip on my rods. That is what it is all about take her to a shop and have her tell you what gripe fit's her hand.

I don't know what kind of money you are talking about? But for the money you can't beat the new EHCO 2 rods. I just bought a very nice 9' 4wgt and really like it. You get two tips that will make it a different rod either slower or faster depending on what you need for the day. "Nice to have the spare tip to" LOL. There rod's run $269.00 for the rod two tips and the tube and sock. Heck of a price for what you are getting. The Rajeff boy's know there rod's and they make a good one. They have a web-site on line if you wish to look them over. Ron
