Members Gmoney Posted July 16, 2006 Members Posted July 16, 2006 So my roomate and I got a new boat the other day for about 200 dollars. The thing is the motor doesn't work on it. It's a 85 hp engine. It's a 1976 Johnson motor. Does anyone know where I can get a decent motor, manual to fix the old one, or somewhere to repair it for really cheap. If buying another motor...then I need one that's about a 40 hp. Thanks
Members Cory Lomon Posted July 18, 2006 Members Posted July 18, 2006 look on ebay for manual or take it to a boat shop! johnson makes a great motor just start out by changeing the plugs put fresh gas in the plug port not mixed gas!and u can warm up the plugs to get u started! that motor is prob been stored and needs to be loosend up and prob needs a tune up at a boat shop! well thats my 2 cen's
Members Gmoney Posted July 24, 2006 Author Members Posted July 24, 2006 Thanks for the advice...got the motor working. Except for one thing, it won't go in neutral or reverse. Any one have any advice?
Wayne SW/MO Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 If its been setting that long you may need to replace the pump impeller. You want to make absolutely certain that it is working before you run the motor for any period of time. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Members Cory Lomon Posted July 25, 2006 Members Posted July 25, 2006 it def need's to go to a boat shop and have a tune up and they will help you fix the probs!
BrianK Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 Same problem different guy... All this talk of hi water at Taney gets me thinking I need to get my old 20 hp 1974 Merc fixed. I also bought a little boat and motor last summer. runs well but starting is the problem.the 'starter shiv' and 'starter pawls' pooped out. This happened on my maiden voyage (and still only)on Taney last summer. Luckily no generation that am and i was able to limp back to the ramp with tail between legs. ouch. A Merc shop says those parts are hard to come by. Just thought I'd throw it out to see if anyone has an old Merc collecting dust in a shed somewhere before i head to ebay or Mercuryblahblahblah.com. thanks, Brian
Gary Lange Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 I would talk to Mike at Top Gun Marine in Nixa, Mo. at 417-725-1887 he does a lot of work on the older motors and is a top flight marine mechanic. He is located at 2019 Michael Ln. Respect your Environment and others right to use it!
