10pointer Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 thinking of heading down this weekend with a friend of mine and he said someone his uncle knew caught a couple lunkers last weekend or somthing like that and there were a ton of fish in the water. I havent been to roaring river in a few years but dont remember much stocking of large trout like that. Have they started this up recently? Anyone seeing nice fish in the water? I couldnt tell as much from the previous reports.. so..hows the fishin and the size? thanks, jason
Roaring River Veteran Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 10pointer, They do not stock brood stock on a regular basis, but they do turn loose a few on occasion. They are usually in the 3 to 5 lb range and usually released at the end of a week going into a weekend. There are always a few big fish around but finding them can be difficult and catching them even harder yet. Look in deep water with good current with heavy nymphs. a lot of times people won't see them until they set the hook and a monster comes out of the current. Then they loose their cool and break off. Don't let the clear water fool you. A big fish will hide very easily. The big fish will stay deep and close to rocks waiting for the easy meal. timsfly Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 I talked to Kevin today, he is the asst. manager of the Roaring River Hatchery. He told me the hatchery would stock 50 more lunkers(around 3-4 pounds) again this friday night, the spring he told me was still producing about 6-7 million gallons per day, and that at the last meeting he attended the talk was friday thru monday this winter at all parks except merimac springs, I think it was said earlier they are open all winter for C&R. Hope this helps, fishing was good last night on a green ant and a #22 apricot fur bug, and black beetles will catch fish all day long, still getting a few on caddis, small adams, and on lt. cahills near the end of the evening.
