Members IronmanDec Posted March 30, 2011 Members Posted March 30, 2011 Well this will be my first post to the forums, usually my friend, browningfisherman, post. Well for spring break from MU my buddy and I decided for a 4 day trip to Montauk/Current with the girlfriends. We arrived at the park and set up shop Saturday afternoon with drizzle on and off. We left the girls in the camper and went down to tan vat. It wasn't stellar but we had some luck with us. There was a dry fly hatch at the parking lot and picked up a few on drys. Worked our way downstream fishing as we went. Ended up with a few Bows but nothing to write home about. The water was not dirty, but it had the green/blue heavy hue. Here is a fish from the night. Didn't measure but really close to 17" if it wasn't. Then Sunday we decided to fish the park. The weather wasn't the best but the fishing was pretty good. Temps were low 40's, high 30's and cloudy. Midges were the main use, olive, red, and creme were the go to's for that day. In one of the pools laid a very nice trout. My buddy cast to him for a while then I tried. When almost all hope was lost I changed colors and there he was. Again water was I would say slightly high, and still off color, blue/green. 22 1/2", 5 lb 10 ounces Monday we fished the park again in the morning and found the colors that were working. Then the afternoon we all packed up and went to Baptist which was the best decision we made. The fish were biting and biting hard. My g/f hooked into a brown that would of went 5+#. unfortunately he got away from us before we could land him, awesome awesome fish. My buddy hooked into a big rainbow right after the brown, but in the swift water couldn't turn him and got under a tree in the water and broke off. We picked up a few more bows in the water by the access then worked on down. The browns were biting. We used the same midges as earlier and they were still hitting just as hard there as in the park and the nice thing was, the browns were hitting too! After the first two big fish got away we didn't get into anything monster after that but picked up some nice 15-16" browns down river. Even got one that ran under a rootwad and out the other side, I couldnt pull him back through so I crossed the stream reached under the water breaking up the roots and getting my line free with the fish still on! Lucky me and thanks to a good leader! I do like Rio leaders, And I can vouch for them there cause i would pull and he would pull and we seesawed the heck out of it before i could get the line free from the wad. We caught a lot of fish on about any color we threw. They were defiantly feeding. Tuesday Morning Decided to go back to Baptist and fish again hoping it was anything like the night before. Not even close. Water still a little off color with the blue/green but not bad at all. Still the deeper holes were the darker blue color and not clear. Couldn't hardly catch any. We might of managed 10-15 between all of us for the 4 hours we fished. The fish must of been feeding before a new weather system was rolling in, since it did rain in the night. All in all I can say it was a good spring break, could of been warmer but the amounts of fish and good times shared was well worth it.
Trout Commander Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Welcome aboard and thanks for sharing. You guys caught some nice fish! I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
stlfisher Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Nice report, great fish, and great pics. Looks like a great time!
Members BrowningFisherman Posted March 30, 2011 Members Posted March 30, 2011 Baptist is full of browns right now, problem is most of them aren't much more than 5" long ironman caught all the big ones and left me all the slop. Good hatches both last night and this morning, I know there was a BWO last night but I couldn't get em to rise, there was a strong caddis hatch and I caught a few on an elk hair and then a couple more on a #18 mayfly. Just be ready to tie on a lot of different things. I will say this morning when we got back to the truck I found about a #18 live midge in the laces of my wader boot that looked pretty olive.
Members IronmanDec Posted March 30, 2011 Author Members Posted March 30, 2011 The only thing I should have done different this morning was strip woollies or leeches or anything to see if that made any difference. thanks for the welcome! But Browning is right. Tons of browns around Baptist right now. A lot of babies too. Maybe they recently got stocked. A lot 6"-8"ers but an occasional 15"-18". I would recommend a full box and don't be afraid to switch. Fish are there just have to keep changing to find what they want.
Nortrad Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Welcome, it appears you had them dialed in. Been waiting for a Baptist report, not quite 'dialed in' there yet...time will tell. Good work and keep posting.
Ill Trout Bum Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Great report and nice looking fish. What did the big rainbow in the park take? Scott
