catman70
Cut and copied from Conservation Issues: Just saw this ad in the Baxter Bulletin (http://www.baxterbulletinonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060721/NEWS01/607210316/1002) talking about new gravel mining permits. Paper begins the argument by talking to someone who loves smallmouth fishing, but thinks that not mining gravel and sand from a local source would cost too much. And, therefore, the growth of the twin lakes area would be stunted. One question: What would the cost be to go into the river after mining and engineer habitat that was destroyed due to the mining? The same has to be done by foresters, although when they harvest an area it is blatantly obvious to all who pass by - thus fostering more support for replanting. What can be done to prohibit gravel mining on this beautiful smallmouth fishery altogether? If a tree in my yard falls on my neighbor's house it's my responsibility, right? Well, following that logic; if a landowner allows mining on their property and the result of that is detrimental to my property downstream, does that mean I can sue the landowner upstream for damages? If so, I'd bet that access to the creek would be severely limited in the future. Please add thoughts and forgive my spelling.
John Berry
This is a sad state of affairs. We discussed this at the Cotter Chamber of Commerce and North Arkansas Fly Fishers. The local progress is due to our pristine lakes, rivers, and creeks. If we allow them to be destroyed progress will cease. Danoinark
John I agree with you. The phenomenal growth of people, infrastructure and development in Baxter and surrounding counties is due mostly to the recreational value of the area. Is there still a Crooked Creek group leading the fight against this, as when Dave and Emily Whitlock were involved? Dano I think it was called the Crooked Creek Coalition. John, you may have even written an article about it. I think I have read about it in your archives on your site. This same gravel miner was at the heart of the controversary back in 1999 if I recall correctly....Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
John Berry
The same guy, Guy King was the center of controversy before and is at the center now. The fight is now being led by the friends of the White and Norfork (Crooked Creek is a major tributary). Alas Dave and Emily moved to Oklahoma a few months ago. Danoinark
I knew they had moved, just didn't know if the Coalition was still organized. Well Gene and his group will do a yeoman's job then.
