Kansas Fly Fisher Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 Took a buddy over to Bennett today. It was his first trip there and his first attempt at trout fishing and using a fly rod. We had a great day. It was overcast with some wind and the water felt cool on the legs. We fished from about 8:30a.m. until 2:30p.m. I'm not sure exactly how many fish we caught, but we both brought home a limit for a cookout tomorrow. UMMMM UMM, can't beat fresh smoked trout! Anyway, back to the report. White was the color of choice. It really didn't matter what it was as long as it was white. We site fished mainly, since this was the easiest method to start a newbie on. A white marabou mini-jig was the ticket. Most of our fish came with the mini-jig. I also experimented with a chartreuse egg fly. They keyed in on it quickly and charged hard but would either turn at the last second or spit it back out as fast as they took it. A couple fell to a red egg fly but for the most part they ignored it. I tried a #12 crackleback and caught one on the drift and missed one strike while stripping it back. Also, I would include the "bedspread" in the popular fly catagory today. It was almost as productive as the white mini-jig. The water was clear to slightly stained with very little debris floating down. All in all I would give today an "A". John Born to Fish, Forced to Work KSMEDIC.COM

Kansas Fly Fisher Posted July 22, 2006 Author Posted July 22, 2006 It was actually a pretty good day. The only time it was really hot was first thing in the morning. Then the breeze kicked up and the cool water kept you comfortable all day. Born to Fish, Forced to Work KSMEDIC.COM
CaptainT16 Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 Thanks for the great report. I think my father and I are going to head over that way on Tuesday. Anyone else going to be around that area on Tuesday? With Taney running water all the time, we thought we would make the drive back to Bennett since it's been awhile since we have been there. Sounds like a great time, can't wait! Did you mainly fish zone 1 while you were there? That is the only zone I fish, but may try a few other places this time? Only time will tell! Kansas Fly Fisher Posted July 22, 2006 Author Posted July 22, 2006 We stayed in zone 1 all day. We were between the darn and the first handicap fishing access. I was wanting to try below the bridge but we just didn't get there this time. I hear that's a great place to fish. Good luck on your trip. Born to Fish, Forced to Work KSMEDIC.COM
CaptainT16 Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 I've always wanted to fish beneath the bridge as well, but have never made it. Seems like we always get in one area and stay around that. I would like to venture out a bit more and see what I can find. Were the crowds very bad for you guys? I wouldn't think they would be with the heat, but I suppose as the beginning there will be a few, but as the day goes by, probably gets thinnned out some? Kansas Fly Fisher Posted July 22, 2006 Author Posted July 22, 2006 There really wasn't any crowds. There were two on the handicap access and one in the water when we got there. Shortly after that the two on the access left and the guy in the water continued on down stream. We pretty much had our little section to ourselves. Also, I forgot to mention earlier. There are a couple of REAL nice browns cruising the area I mentioned earlier. One would go 4-5 pounds. Their spooky though. Probably had everything thrown at them. Might be worth a try to spend some time figuring them out. I caught my big brown in this same area. I think that's why it's my favorite spot. Good luck. Born to Fish, Forced to Work KSMEDIC.COM
CaptainT16 Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 Even better, maybe I could get lucky enough to land one of them. The biggest brown I have caught so far in my 4 yrs of fly fishing is maybe 13 inches, so that would be great. Sounds like it should be a great time and hopefully the heat will keep the crowds away. I will let everyone know how we do and hopefully I will be able to post a great report.
