Cocry Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Any suggestions on a rod from $125-$200 for throwing streamers for browns and/or bass? Thanks in advance, Cory
Kyle Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Any suggestions on a rod from $125-$200 for throwing streamers for browns and/or bass? Thanks in advance, Cory TFO, hard to go wrong with any of their rods.
flytyer57 Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I was gonna suggest St. Croix's Bank Robber series until I saw the $$$ limit. These rods were designed by Kelly Galloup for casting streamers, but they run $400 in the latest BP catalog. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
Cocry Posted April 28, 2011 Author Posted April 28, 2011 Yea, that's a little costly for me. I've got a TFO 7.6 3wt which i really enjoy so I might have to look into that. Thanks for the suggestions! Cory
Members Iliketoflyfish Posted April 28, 2011 Members Posted April 28, 2011 I was gonna suggest St. Croix's Bank Robber series until I saw the $$ limit. These rods were designed by Kelly Galloup for casting streamers, but they run $400 in the latest BP catalog. If you're planning on throwing heavy articulated flies with sink-tip line, look at the Fenwick HMX in a 7 to 9 weight. You can find them on eBay for as low as $115, and they are an extremely fast action rod. The biggest downfall is that they are only available as a 2-piece if you want to pack small, otherwise it is a great streamer rod. As for the Bank Robber, I have the 7 weight, and I'm unimpressed. It just doesn't really handle heavy line or flies well. In fact, I broke the tip section on that rod just practicing in my yard shortly after I bought it. St. Croix shipped me a new tip section within a week, but I'll never cast anything heavier than 200 grain line and unweighted flies with it. They're all good fish. Some are just better than others.
Brian K. Shaffer Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 I say - just find a cheapy-cheapo that lines up right with your flyrod .. the fly line is the big deal here. Bass Pro just came out with a rod like this called " HEAT ". It looks odd.. but I know it would big bugs plenty easy. Jut make sure your line matches the flyrod you are throwing ... by air resiliency and ability to keep tracking straight. The more crazy bouncing and shock sent to the line because the rod couldn't handle the line.. that's when you get problems. my .02 == check it out, try before you buy, bring your reel and line and throw it Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
OKFlyFisher44 Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 Check out the TFO Clouser rod. I just picked one up in a 6wt to use for a smallmouth rod. Absolutely love it. It will cast heavy streamers or poppers with ease. Its a lil' more $$$ than what you have budgeted but it is an amazing rod for chucking streamers, its crazy. I also have a TFO TiCR series rod in a 8wt that I use for a striper rod in the spring/early summer that casts streamers excellent as well. Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
