I have never cleaned my fly line. It is about two years old, but has only really seen one good season of use at the trout parks.

I did buy a pack of the SA line cleaning pads. So here's my question.....should I also buy a lubricant or dressing? Would I pair it up with the pad (i.e. on the pad while wiping the line)?

This part of the sport is new to me. With my spincast rods line was cheap and easily replaceable.

To clean my fly lines, I wet a wash cloth with warm water and run the line through it a couple times to get any dirt off of it. Then I dress the line with line dressing. I prefer to use SA Fly Line Dressing, but have used a product called "Glide Line Dressing" in the past. Just put a spot the size of a dime on a clean cloth and run the line through the dressing a couple times and you should be good.

If your line is extremely dirty from pond scum and such, the SA line cleaning pads do a great job of removing that scum from the line.

One note on line dressing brands. It would probably be best to use the line manufacturers brand of line dressing if they make it so the same compounds used in the line during manufacturing are replaced as you clean and dress you line. That's probably why I like SA line dressing, since most of my lines are SA.

There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

Thank you very much for that advice. My line is just the one that came with the Dogwood Canyon setup I have. I imagine it's probably the Hobbs Creek line from BPS.

To save a little money on lines.. you might consider a company named Hook and Hackle. I believe it is hookhack.com

They have lines for all kinds of price ranges and the are made by a major company.. way better than the Bass Pro branded lines.

Case in point, I ordered 4 lines at $25 each on Wednesday and they got here today. I just looked up the current price on the same lines and they are at $33.95... so you gotta watch they put certain lines on sale.

I also will give a big thumbs up to Glide line dressing.. but you have to put it on .. let it sit.. and wipe it off.. I really wipe it down or buff it a bunch to make sure it is all off.

by the way Jack, there is a section here called Rods,Reels,Lines,Leaders,Waders under the Fly Fishing header. Just scroll down on the main page to find it.
