Andrew324 Posted May 7, 2011 Posted May 7, 2011 Fished the lower and upper wire road sections yesterday. Had luck with nymphs (big surprise) more than buggars, scuds, globalls, and midge's. Took several strung together to get them down quick enough. The water is flowing really hard even though it is finally dropping. I imagine in a few weeks the creek will be really good. It was tough to find fish as there is alot of new gravel and they are still hiding around structure and in deep holes. Green is good. Tan not so much. Lots of new downed trees in the lower wire road, but lots of new riffles and runs that were previously jammed up. Upper wire didn't seem to change much, caught a few little dudes there. Definately an influx of scuds, every rock I picked up had about 10/1 scud/caddis larvae. But, I had small #16 & #18 brown scuds that they would not take. I will attach photos as soon as I can size them down. Andrew Nelson Outdoor Adventures Graduate Assistant Campus Recreation Missouri State University
OKFlyFisher44 Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 Its still off color and muddy? A buddy of mine fished it last sunday and the river looked AWESOME in his pictures. Planning on coming down there on monday for my birthday to fish the creek, cant wait to see how the creek has changed. My buddy said it looks to have changed for the better. Lots of new holes and most of the big log jams were washed out. What size flies are u using? I see that you put #16-#18 on your scuds. I dont fish anything smaller than a #12 when I go to Crane, usually #8s and #10s on all my flies and always have really good success. The larger bugs will cut down on the small fish too and help get your flies down to where the big fish are hiding in the deep holes. troutfiend1985 Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 Hoping to get down next week, and if not next week then a wweek and a half later. God I can't wait until school is out. “The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people” J. Brandeis
Andrew324 Posted May 8, 2011 Author Posted May 8, 2011 The creek is not muddy but it is off color. It does look really gorgeous right now. Your buddy hit the nail on the head. The creek is definitely different, and most of the old log jams did wash out. There are some new obstacles, but all in all really good. Those were the only size scuds I had with me. I usually just fish size 10 or 12 hare's ear's, and beadheaded things i call "emerald nymphs" that kinda look moss green with crystal flash, kinda like a cracked out caddis larvae. OkFlyFisher - Do you mess with nymph shot, or do you find that the weight of your fly is all you need? Troutfiend- I KNOW!!! I graduate with my B.A. on Friday and I have three weeks until graduate classes start. Can anyone say trout odyssey? Haha. Congrats If your masters degree is anything like my law school experience then GET OUT AND FISH NOW OR YOU WILL BE SORRY LATER!!! My first two years have gone by in a flash, but the first year sucked and the 2nd year was only a little better. I get out to fish about once each semester, two times over christmas break and 5-8 times during the summer. I used to go every other week in my past life. But again, I think it will be worth it as soon as the economy decides to rebound. “The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people” J. Brandeis
OKFlyFisher44 Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 Andrew...unless the creek is REALLY low, I always use split shot even though I tie all my nymphs with tungsten beads. Gotta get those bugs down quick enough to get past the lil' guys to where the bruisers are holding, which doesnt work half the time. Glad to hear the creek looks good, hitting it tomorrow...cant wait! Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
Members jwpage Posted May 10, 2011 Members Posted May 10, 2011 I would like to try and fly fish the Crane. Can anyone provide me directions from Tulsa? John "The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope." John Buchan
chub minnow Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 I44 to 265 at marionville and on through Aurora to Crane. You'll need a map to het around town to all the various access points. Never been so lost in such a small town!
Jack Jones Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 Getting there depends on where you're coming from. If your in the Springfield area, take highway 14 to Billings, turn as if you were going towards Aurora, and you'll see one of the signs to take you to Crane. I believe it is Route 413. Once on 413 though, I recommend checking out and printing out the maps on this forum. They are reasonably accurate, if not totally to scale (as if they could be). You just have to keep your eyes open because some of the turn offs aren't too well marked. RSBreth Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 I need to get back down there - haven't been since February. After a flood you always have the "Aw man, (whatever your favorite little spot was) is gone." Then you find a new spot that was created by the flood that's just as good or better. Tulsa to Crane?Tulsa OK to Crane MO Wow - about three hours away. I live about 30 minutes away, and yet haven't been in more than two months? I have no excuse, do I?
