Jack Jones Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Nice colors to him. What's that lure in his mouth? "Thanks to Mother Mercy, Thanks to Brother Wine, Another night is over and we're walking down the line" - David Mallett
flytyer57 Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Caught this greenie just after moving down to AR. Caught in Crooked Creek on a White Gurgler. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

Wayne SW/MO Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 In many parts of Missouri the Green Sunfish is known as the Black Perch. I've heard green sunfish called black perch all my life and in fact didn't learn they were green perch until I was an adult. I have heard people call them bluegill, but generally by people who seldom fish and make a guess at what they are. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Kayser Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Thought black perch were warmouth? Or are those called goggle eye where rock bass don't live? WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
Wayne SW/MO Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 I don't know if there is a colloquial name for Warmouth, but Warmouth is the official name of another sunfish that is very similar to goggle eyes and Ozark bass. To the best of my knowledge they only exist in the flatland of SE Missouri. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Kayser Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Yeah, I know. I've caught warmouth here in IL, but also got some out of Lake of the Ozarks once. Green sunnies are pretty much everywhere, and goggle eye are in almost all (if not all) Ozark streams. I'm just curious what a "black perch" actually is, because I've heard people call both greenies and warmouth by that name. Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
Outside Bend Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 I've heard folks call greenies black perch, and I've caught a few warmouth in the Marmaton River, in the upper Osage river drainage. FT- that black spot on the dorsal makes me think yours is a bluegill x green sunfish hybrid. Cool fish. <{{{><
fishinSWMO Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Black perch is what my Dad always calls them, perfect bait for limb lines. Jeremy Dodson
