Jack Jones Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 Went fishing at the access. The water was quite up. Unfortunately, I got skunked on the boat ramp. Tried everything in the box from plastics, cranks, to spinners. Even went so far as to go buy some night crawlers and toss them. Nothing. I ended up with a baby bass (about 3 in long) on the worm and that was it. Saw some kayakers though who mentioned that they had gotten snagged on a downed tree up river a bit from the access point. The water was flowing at a good clip. Oh well, it beat mowing the lawn. Maybe I'll have better luck today taking the yak out. Yeah - if you look at the water level gauge you could tell it's pretty high. http://ozarkanglers.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=393 The Finley is only about a foot or so up on the upper part (from Linden to the park in Ozark) - in other words, perfect for fishing. That's where I went today. The James will need a day or five to come down.
Jack Jones Posted May 30, 2011 Author Posted May 30, 2011 Hope you did better than me RS. I went to the Finley today and had fun paddling, to a point. It got pretty swift upstream. I did get a few nibbles, but nothing hit at all. "Thanks to Mother Mercy, Thanks to Brother Wine, Another night is over and we're walking down the line" - David Mallett

Rebel crick hopper 5. 3/8 oz. fire tiger with gold indiana 6. Finally...........night crawlers hoping something would bite. What about you? What was your luck and lure? Finally...........night crawlers hoping something would bite. What about you? What was your luck and lure? A semi-custom compact spinnerbait (firetiger) - One nice Smallmouth, a couple of smaller guys. Rapala DT4 in Hot Mustard - One nice Largemouth - couple of Smallmouths and half a dozen Rock Bass. My 3/16 finesse jig in PB&J - one nice 3 lbs. Smallmouth. Wacky rigged 5" Wave Worm Tiki Stick in Bruised Orange - Two more Largemouths. Nothing big. I think - this was early yesterday and I slept, worked in the garden, and drank adult beverages in the time between then and now. That's the best I remember. I'm surprised the spinners didn't produce - where were you throwing them?
Jack Jones Posted May 31, 2011 Author Posted May 31, 2011 I tended to fan cast. I dropped anchor in the middle and would cast from one side to the other, changing the direction by about 10 degrees. I went from the rock bluff walls to under trees. I tried to fish the edges of the lily pad beds. RSBreth Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Oh - the park, right? It gets hit pretty hard this time of year - I'm not surprised someone could get skunked there. I was downstream near Nixa. I guess this thread isn't about the James anymore, is it?
Daveinozark Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 ozark park was very crowded yesterday afternoon. I knew better but the kids wanted to try for perch. Not a thing. And no one else was getting them either. I threw a small yellow spinnerbait a dozen times into the lily pads for bass until I lost it. Darned if I didn't even see 1 fish jump. I recommend early mornings for Ozark park if that's where you want to try. Should get better with no rain on tap this week I hope. High water seems to throw me off my game for some reason. I've had the best success with this: http://www.lurenet.com/productdetail.aspx?id=f91478v catches the little ones and big ones, including perch. You'll be surprised how far you can cast that little thing too
Jack Jones Posted June 1, 2011 Author Posted June 1, 2011 Yeah, I was throwing the Teeny Wee-R in the brown crawdad pattern. Maybe I'll pick one up in the baby bass pattern. Sorry that the post took a wrong turn at Albuquerque. I'll get it back on track in the next one!
