Kayser Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 A pellet gun has enough pop to down a heron. You just have to shoot it in the head. It's also quiet, so if no one sees you do it, no harm done, just more ducks and fish out there for us sportsmen. BTW, a nested pair of herons took 8 baby wood ducks with radio collars a few years ago. The IDNR found the 8 collars "whitewashed" in the nest. Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
Murdoc Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Can someone ask if there is anything that can be done?? I've got a pellet gun that my brother juiced up that can do some real damage. It hurts me to see all these trout and ducks used as "whitewash". I'm willing if the laws permits. Smiles are free http://rdpflyrods.com/
Members SDHaze Posted August 8, 2006 Members Posted August 8, 2006 Ok gents, here’s my thoughts on the Herons. 1.What is the difference between feathers or fiberglass? If you drive by Moonshine early in the morn, you’ll see about 10 to 20 fiberglass Herons out on the water. 2.Herons are not hurting the fishery as Bill thinks, we are. Think about it guys, how many people are caught with over limits or just fishing illegally? Foul hooks, ect… Herons don’t stock their freezers with fish then later throw them away because they go bad, we do. They eat what they need not what they want. 3. Herons were here long before we were. 4.I’m not PRO Heron but I think we need to stop blaming wildlife and start blaming ourselves if we think it hurts our fisheries. 5.I’ve seen more Eagles take fish than Herons. Shall we start blaming them also? Of course not, we would not think of doing such a thing.

Rob In my life I have noticed that I never need a fishing licence unless I get checked. I think shooting Herons would only be illegal if a person got caught. Wayne SW/MO Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 BTW, a nested pair of herons took 8 baby wood ducks with radio collars a few years ago. Maybe as they grew the collars strangled them and the Heron ate the dead chicks.ph34r: Lets see, Mergansers, Herons, Eagles, Osprey, Gulls, Kingfishers, Otters, Mink, snakes, I guess would be a good start for the slaughter. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

I understand what you are saying Wayne, but with a lack of large and/or natural predators sometimes man has to assume that roll to control species that get out of balance. Besides we hunt deer, rabbits, fox and so on and so on with out killing them out. Why cant it be the same for Herons or anyother species that get so numerous that it becomes a pest. rainbow Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 I think MDC should make the herons follow the same rules we do. No fish in the slot in the trophy area and daily limit of 4. No browns under 20 inches and when they have a limit they have to quit.
Members rubicon31 Posted August 8, 2006 Members Posted August 8, 2006 i think it is funny how topics can get out of control on the forum take for example this one the topic was started by a gentlemen, being amazed at a heron's ability to eat a "big fish" now, it is a topic about killing all herons on taney, because they are killing our trout has any one fished taney lately? i seriously doubt taney's trout population will be hurt by a few herons
motroutbum Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 you could always use a .22 with short cart. about as loud as a pellet gun!!!! There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!
MTM Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 rubicon31-I don't think the thread is out of shape at all. They are still talking about Heron's and how to control them. Most of it is Tongue and Cheek. Get it. Ron
