Members ENVIUS Posted June 11, 2011 Members Posted June 11, 2011 Tomorrow me and a friend are wanting to float from Delaware Town access to Shelvin Rock. Looking for any information about any down trees or any other obstacle that might cause any problems. Also does the river Y any where or is it a straight float from Delaware to Shelvin. This will be my first float on the James. I drove down to Shelvin today and they were doing a massive cleanup down there. Looked like they have over 100+ tires! Im glad there are lots of people out there willing to do that. Then went and checked out Delaware and it seemed like it would be a nice trip. Thanks for any information Edit..we will be floating in a 14ft flat bottom
Members Nolan_Whaley Posted June 13, 2011 Members Posted June 13, 2011 I don't know if you made this trip or not, but I floated this section for the first time yesterday. We did the float in kayaks, and i'd say it's a good fishing float, and it's really an all day'er. There's a couple of sections that might be tricky in a bigger boat. On the upper end, a ways after the hwy 14 bridge, there's a split in the river (stay left), and then a couple of downed trees that i drug around. Also, about half way or so, there's a ledge drop of several feet, and then just above the shelvin take out, there is another set of ledges. The water on this section looked very fishy to me, but i only got to fish the upper third. Caught a couple of very small fish on a fly rod was all. Talked to several others that i think did a lot better than me with spinning gear.

This ledge that you are talking about. Is is a straight drop that we have to get out and carry the boat around it...or a drop that we can slide the boat down?

I think you could slide the boat down. i was able to float both ledges in a kayak. Fast water over flat rock ledges stair step into a deep pool.

RSBreth Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 Yeah - it's not that bad, especially when the water's up, just a nice drop into the "Round Pool." You can see it here on Google Earth:James River Drop into the Round Pool
Members ENVIUS Posted June 21, 2011 Author Members Posted June 21, 2011 We made the float on Sunday - It was quite a long float since the river was down - the 2 or 3 rock ledges along the way were a pain to move a flat bottom boat down...other than that it was a good float....seen several paddle fish ....came across this guy just standing there in the river and another guy on the bank..the guy on the bank tells me the guy in the river is about to jump on a paddle fish.....the guy jumps on it..it resembled someone jumping on an alligator and getting death rolled LOL - i had never seen one in the wild....its nice to see fish like that in local rivers...seen quite a few gar to. Came across this one who just just died one way or another...took these pics of him...
Jack Jones Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 Congrats on a nice float. That's a heck of a fish. Honestly, I wouldn't even know what to do with one of them if I hooked it, and even seeing it would seem a little odd. I'm a New England native and anything that big was too deep to see, LOL. This is like an episode of River Monsters. "Thanks to Mother Mercy, Thanks to Brother Wine, Another night is over and we're walking down the line" - David Mallett
