Members Matt_MO Posted June 28, 2011 Members Posted June 28, 2011 BPS has pflueger kit for $50 I will probably go with it I started with the same kit (not that I am any good now lol), it's not bad at all. My only complain which I noticed after I got my Reddington outfit is that the line on the kit is poor. As soon as I got my new one I could really feel the difference of the line shooting out rather than sticking at times. That one kit from walmart I have seen, if it's the same one it doesn't even have backing.
ozark trout fisher Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 OTR, I appreciate your openmindedness in regard to beginnesr equipment, but your "junk" comment is funny. Fair enough. A good fisherman can do well with any kind of set up. I just think that if someone can afford to spending 20 or 30 dollars more, they might get a better beginning experience. But if the $19.99 set up is what you can get, then by all means go with it. I am anything but an elitist on this- when I spin fish I use a $20 ultralight outfit bought at Walmart. But for a decent fly rod that allows me to fish it the way I want to, I feel the need to spend at least $60 or 70. If you can get a serviceable outfit for less then that's all to the good though.

Right on, OTR! I had occasion to escort my wife to Walmart today, and out of curiosity I checked on the fly rod kits. The one I bought has been replaced by an Ambassador kit that looks a little better and sells for 29.95. If I upgrade I would like to have a bamboo. Any suggestions?

I went with a Montague Leaping Brook that I bought on Ebay. It is a very old rod (I believe it was made sometimes in the 50s) and about as low-end as bamboo fly rods get (I got it for $70 something), but it is actually a nice little rod. It's not my main set up, but it has always been a treat when I have fished it. There is just something about the slow, graceful action of wood rods that I love. For me it's more of a sentimental possession than an actual fishing tool, but it's been a fine fishing rod as well. You can get a lot better rods, but you'll have a hard time finding any bamboo rod for less than the lower end Montagues. Maybe there are some, but I couldn't find any except those that were in very poor, unfishable condition. I can only dream of ever buying a new bamboo rod or even a moderately priced used one. Bamboo rods (at least the ones I can afford) are fragile old things. That's why it's not my main fishing rod, although I would love it to be.
crappie_adams83 Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 $19.95? Really? Gotta be one big package of junk. I know I've seen some cheap setups at Walmart, but I'm sure they cost more than that. They were rated for 5-6wt, but they looked the size of a 10-12wt. I think someone would be better off renting and getting something they can actually cast properly with . actually i got a fly fishing outfit at mc sports for 30 bucks came with a couple of flies rod reel line and tippet and have so far caught four small mouths and a bucket load of sunfish so dont knock the cheapies they can be a great start for when u have the money to upgrade to something a lot better if every body had a pole and a fish on the line there would never be a war
Members BigMinnow Posted July 10, 2011 Author Members Posted July 10, 2011 I had taken mine out to the james river and caught a little bit of everything including a couple of smallie over 14 and a really nice largemouth around 2 1/2 # that was a blast but I think I need to learn more patients reeling in my catch.
