Hammer time Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Put in at mutton at 7pm, headed south towards birch and hit some chanel banks with a 8" strawberry translucent worm 5/16 bullet weight. Seemed like every little pocket would hold a fish or two. Had two solid keepers before dark both over 16". Fish were in 25-30ft Headed to piont 5 area to tie on night baits and to see if the whites would surface, I was not alone, but no sufacing, bummer. Went north under mile long bridge and stayed on chanel banks with 3/8 black single spin, slow rolling. Action started right away lots of shorts but strong and lots of jumping, many felt like keepers but I stuck them and they were short. Tried 10" black worm, same deal lots of shorts but more action, and schools on chanel swings 15-25ft deep.Had several back to back casts with 13" ers all over it. I mean they wanted the bait, no tap tap just bam. Moved to the deep side of the big island and caught two keeps on the blade, and then started to realize I was now surrounded by lightning on all sides accept the east. Decided to call it a night and headed back to mutton. I hit the main lake point on south side of mutton and caught two more shorts on the blade, and the rain started. Had her on the trailer 11:30, just in time, started pouring and rained big time all the way home to Republic. Overall caught 25 to 30 bass all large mouth with 4 keepers, I think if the rain would of held off it could of been a great night, thats how it goes. Hope this helps some of you guys. Sure would like to see more night fishing posts, but a realize that are very few guys out. Tight lines everybody.
Walcrabass Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Hammertime, Thanks again for the info. I figured that the fish were in that 30 foot depth by now. I guess you are fishing the Spinnerbaits deep like the worms. Am I correct? As you probably know by now I fish a lot of Jigs. I have found that I can keep a lot of those smaller fish off by fishing big bulky Jigs with big trailers. This gives the bigger fish a better chance of grabbing the bait before one of those smaller warp speed Bass grab it. I also go to 13 to 15" worms( Those Suckers are gettin expensive!!!!). I still catch a good amount of small Bass on them but I think the fish can find them better after dark. Sounds like you like that night bite as well as I do. Beats fishing in the 100+ degree sun and I don't see near as many jet ski's ( NONE THAT IS!!!!!) If you would like to send me a personal message I will see if I am smart enough to retrieve it from the web site. I would be glad to send a fellow night fisherman one of the Jigs I use.Don't know if I am going Saturday night or not. I have had boat and car troubles both this week. Please keep us posted as it is good to hear those Fishin Tales.
kwall Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Thanks for the report, caint' wait to get back there this weekend

Sure would like to see more night fishing posts, but a realize that are very few guys out. Tight lines everybody. I'm right there with ya. I would take the night time bass fishing with a black light over the sweltering hot days anytime. I do most of my fishing with 8-10" worms and can usually catch a ton of short bass. I think the difference is the part of the lake I usually end up fishing. Most of the time I'm fishing Son's Creek or the CC area. I don't think the larger bass are quite as common as they are from Mutton on up. I'm hoping to get back up there either tomorrow night or saturday night and will probably go to the old state park or Roark Bluff to put in. Good luck to ya.
Members Kevin Wagner Posted July 14, 2011 Members Posted July 14, 2011 Thanks for another great, very helpful report for us night fisherman. If the stars align on Friday I will be headed out to Mutton again after work. I will definitely target some channel swing banks, but I am hoping to try to fish a few good brush piles as well. Hopefully there will be some big ones in there.

Should be good full moon is tomorrow. I agree with your thinking that big baits catch big fish!
Stockton Lake Guide Service Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Great detailed report!! I can't stay up that late anymore, but sounds like lots of fun! Walcrabass Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Thunderin Gobbler, I too believe that there are MORE Big Bass towards the dam end of the lake. But quite honestly I have caught a bunch of 7 to 9 pounders from below Birch Branch, Up Son's Creek, and in the Mutton Creek area. I still say that the size and speed of the bait determines what size of fish you catch especially when the temperature gets really hot. There is just no way that a 12" Bass is going to swallow a big puffey silicone skirted jig with a 4.5" Y-not on it for a trailer as easy as a 5 pounder. I also think that the smaller bass are more content with eating 10 things to get full whereas the bigger bass might prefer just one large item. Just my ideas, doesn't mean I am correct. I usually move or change baits when all I am catching is 13-14 inchers, that gives me more time to concentrate on larger fish and find new spots. Good Luck Guys.

Big bass are going to exert the least amount of energy possibly to get their meals, and that does mean bigger baits. As a matter of fact, my biggest bass on Stockton was caught right across from the CC ramp last summer on a 10" worm-just over 6lbs. They are definitely all over the lake, but I would thing the best odds of catching multiple big fish would be the northern half of the lake though.
