Members T Hood Posted August 11, 2011 Members Posted August 11, 2011 Sounds like fun. I had a battle like that on the Meramec a couple of nights ago. Had no luck fishing Unger Lake, so, I walked over to the Meramec to give it a shot. I had a gar hooked on a chatterbait. As I was bringing him up out of the water, he shook himself off of the hook flying through the air in an arc in the process. It was the first time I'd hooked one. It appears that is the way "fish karma" is working. Best of luck finding your bass. Sounds like a much better fight that the gar.
junkman Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Dog days seem like the best days for lunker bass fishing. late in the evening, every thing seems dead calm. you throw your lure into that perspective spot and than WHAAAAM. Been there don that. Remember many years ago fishing a private lake. it was a hot day in August and the water was dead calm. I had on my trusty Chugger Jr. and was anticipating some great action for they had been hitting on top for days. Set that chugger just inches from a washed out tree stump. Then that familiar pop pop pop. I had popped it about 20 feet away from the stump when I decided to just reel it in and cast to another favorable spot, when WHAM. The fight was on. I was fishing with 12 lb test so I did not worry too much but I could tell by the fight and the explosion on the surface of the water that this bass was big, but not only was it big but it was smart as well. For it decided to make a bee line strait towards the boat. I was reeling as fast as the Zebco 33 would go but this mammoth bass was built for speed for it could swim faster than I could reel. And just at the right moment the old lunker made it's way to the surface and then to mid air. with all the slack and the velocity of the shake from such massive jaws, the chugger didn't have a chance. All I and my cousin could do is stare in disbelief as my lure flew through the air. I have caught a many 5, 7, and 9 lb bass but from sight I would say it was way over 10. To me the dog days of summer and some secluded ponds make for the great fishing. Well worth the little sweat. better luck next time Mark
chambug Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Commonly people refer to the heat of July and August as "Dog Days" but how many of you know from whence the term originated? Okay class, listen up and I'll educate you. Sirius is the Dog Star. During the months of July and August Sirius rises and sets with the sun. During this period we obtain the term: "Dog Days". BTW, I'm 83 today and I feel like a young pup. Sic'm Flyfisher! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY
