Members Pflugradt Posted August 6, 2011 Members Posted August 6, 2011 I have been killing myself not to push fly fishing onto my son and rather to just allow him to come to the sport when he's ready, well in the last month or so he has really taken an interest and so I have been working on his cast with him and waiting for some cooler weather to get out in. Thursday night we took some hoppers to a local lake for an hour or so and he caught his first fish that he made the cast to and hook by himself on a fly rod. Then last night I went and gigged some frogs with a friend of mine and I found a smoking hot gar spot so I decided I would take Kenny there this morning, so he caught his first three gar on a fly rod and he is in love with trash!!! After the third I could tell he was beginning to get a little tired and even though he said he really wanted to stay I said we needed to gt home to do some chores (blamed it on mom!!!) but we had a ball and I am so glad to finally have a seriously interested fishing buddy. Justin Spencer Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Great stuff, I'm jealous of the gar, what were you hooking them on? Members Pflugradt Posted August 8, 2011 Author Members Posted August 8, 2011 I used to use the rope flies but they are a beotch to dig out of their teeth and I hate crippling any fish especially the ones I like to target.... so I've been using just a simple straight eye 2xl #10 or #8 hook wrap the shank with your color choice of thread (red is my favorite...) tie in zonker strip at the bend leaving a very short tail (1/4 the shank length or just a touch more) then run the thread back to the eye and pull the strip over the back. tie it off, clip the excess and whip finish, I don't use any glue on these as a gar will come up behind a fly and let it touch the top of their nose if they are not really hungry and smell it to make sure it's good to eat, if you use glue they will turn off of the fly in a second and not even think about eating it.... if you put 2 or 3 whip finishes on top of one another you can forgo the glue and they can become hooked 6-7 times before they will begin to refuse the fly. Thanks for all the kinds words yall' Steve Check out my warm water flytying and flyfishing how to.
