Members BigBrownTrout Posted August 8, 2011 Members Posted August 8, 2011 Floated Baptist to Cedar from Friday night through Sunday morning. It rained both mornings, but that didn't stop the float crowds. Fished streamers with various nymph trailers dead drifted through deeper holes with some luck. I caught 10 bows and 2 browns - all but three were shorter fish. Caught a 17" bow on a bunny sculpin about 200 yards down from Baptist on Saturday morning, along with a 14 and 15 further down the river in the late afternoon...also on streamers. Picked up a short smallmouth about halfway through the float under a bluff. The fishing was slowly steady in the morning and late afternoon. Definitely didn't catch anything huge, but saw some large browns. Above Baptist early on Saturday I did stick a large fish that promptly snapped off my flies. right after the flies hit the water and started to sink, what I suspect was a larger brown ripped the streamer and trailer off. Beautiful river, first timer for the Current. I'll be back at some point in time.
Nortrad Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 You are 'hooked' now. Fall fishing will be much better, cooler temp's, less floaters, moving browns.

My next trip down there is in three weeks, and I am looking forward to it like you wouldn't believe.. I don't do much summertime trout fishing anymore in the Ozarks because I mostly focus on smallmouth now, but this is when I will start the fall season on the Current, and I will be hitting it regularly between then then and about mid-April if all goes at planned. I think it's gonna be great!
Members DustyPockets Posted August 28, 2011 Members Posted August 28, 2011 Glad you enjoyed the float. My brother and I floated from Tan Vat to Cedar this July with a decent results. I would really like to camp next trip. Interesting story on this float. About 200 yards below Tan Vat we came across a fellow wading. He introduced himself but I have forgotten his name. He had half a dozen Montauk lunker patches and was on the hunt for big trout. He said he waded from Cedar to Tan Vat, I thought you did what! This was about 11:00 in the morning.
