Water is still very low and very clear, the recent rains brought the river up just a bit, but it is falling steadily and

will soon be where it was before it rained. Use 2 or 3 pound line, nothing heaiver will work real good, 2lb is the best.

Stay away from the camo lines, and the blue or white lines, they suck right now, stick with Maxima or some of

the fluorocarbons on the market now days.

I'm fishing 9' 7X leaders most of the time right now, 9' 6X when fishing bigger flies and I'm using 6X fluorocarbon tippets

when fishing nymphs, most of the time.

Water is perfect for dry fly fishing and sight fishing with small flies and jigs, lots of fish still being caught on

hoppers, beetles, caddis, ants, crackle backs, blue wing olives, tricos, and adams.

All these will catch fish every day right now.

Tricos are short lived, daylight till about 9 a.m.

I've been fishing a lot in the mornings using small baby buggers and nymphs, pheasant tails and sow bugs

are best for me right now, but I've been doing well with a small black, or a small olive baby bugger.

I fished a bit the other afternoon using a crackle back, grizzly/holographic green #14, and caught

over 30 in 3 hrs, the trout were really liking it that day.

San juan worms, in red, orange, flo. green and brown are still working very well, as are the chamois

worms, pellet flies tied in dk brown are very good up near any of the hatchery outlets, I like the smaller

ones the best, but all the sizes catch trout. Woolies in black, brown and in ginger have all been working well

the past few weeks, I've even caught a few trout on small bluegill poppers this past week, I think they are hitting

them for hoppers.

Plastic baits are the way to go if you just want a few trout to take home for dinner, the eggs in white, orange, and

flo. yellow have been good, brown works well but best up near the hatchery.

Worms in cheese, orange, pink, and white have been good the past few weeks.

Spinners in brown, black, ginger, and olive have been the best for the past few weeks.

Small crankbaits are still working, rebel crawfish, rapala minnows and about any small 3" and

smaller crankbaits work.

Marabou and micro jigs are very good if you know how to fish them, olive, white, tan, black, black/yellow and

brown/yellow are and have been the best colors most of the year this year, I think a small olive or tan micro

will catch fish almost anytime.

If you are in zone 3 and wanting to fish bait, then nightcrawlers, corn, crickets or powerbait paste or nuggets always

work pretty good donw there.

Good luck on the river.

With Labor Day and its crowds now history, this morning I drove the half hour from home to RR and found a light crowd at the upper end of the park,so I decided to join the very sparse group at the lower end of the camp ground. There was a veritable blizzard of a pale white midge hatch on, but the fish were not rising to them that much. I started out with a #20 elk hair caddis, which they also ignored for the most part. To my surprise, when the fly finally got soaked, the fish finally showed some interest, I started stripping the caddis just under the surface, and the fish started chasing it and I finally started hooking a few. I only fished for about an hour and a half, but caught several this way, including one pretty rainbow of about 16 inches.I also had some hookups with a red San Juan worm. I had left my clip on magnifiers at home.,..you might know,so it was a great effort just to tie on a tippet and fly. But overall, the water is down, very clear, and the weather was very cool and sunny. I also got to break in a new 7' 9", 5 weight Dennis Stone bamboo blank I just got built up,so every fish was a real treat. I had a bit of trouble with the ferrules not fitting so when I got home, I worked on that problem successfully. Nickel silver ferrules are nice, but you have to properly fit them. A little metal polish and that problem was taken care of. I like RR and it's a close trip from home, so I enjoy being able to run down there for a couple of hours of fishing when I have a mind to do so.I usually stop by and visit with Tim at Tim's Flyshop for an hour or so after fishing, but the shop was closed.I guess Tim is off on one of his Alaska trips or something.

I have a friend, a Jewish carpenter, whom you should get to know. If you do, your life will never be the same.
