Jdecoudres Posted September 10, 2011 Posted September 10, 2011 anyone know of a reasonable place to get prism markers. they seem on the pricy side
Outside Bend Posted September 10, 2011 Posted September 10, 2011 Most craft stores carry them- Hobby Lobby, Michael's, the like. They are pretty pricey no matter where you go. Sharpies come in a ton of colors, are waterproof, and quite a bit cheaper. Not as many colors available as the Prismacolor markers, but still a pretty wide selection. <{{{><
Jdecoudres Posted September 10, 2011 Author Posted September 10, 2011 just regular old sharpie markers?
Outside Bend Posted September 10, 2011 Posted September 10, 2011 Yep, I've seen multi-color packs of them at Lowe's and a few other places for 8 or ten bucks. They don't seem to color Puglisi fibers as well as Prisma markers, but in my experience they've worked just well for coloring foam, bucktail, craft fur, mylar, and other synthetics. Worth a try! <{{{><
Jdecoudres Posted September 10, 2011 Author Posted September 10, 2011 ok thanks. i thought maybe prism was used in fly tying cause i thought prism had that sparkle stullf like sprakle braid in it
RSBreth Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 I second the Sharpie's tip - they don't work as well on some things but you can buy them in tons of colors, and also get fine point ones. The best place for both is usually Hobby Lobby.
Arofishing Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 I use both. I had access to a lot of Prisma's since my wife and her friend are architects. As others have said, I don't think the difference between Prismas and Sharpies are appreciable for most of the uses we put them towards. I'd recommend starting the bulk of your color collection with Sharpies and getting a Prisma or two in frequently used colors so you can get an idea of whether or not you *need* them. They cost $5 a marker pretty much everywhere, unless you know some architects .
rfd515 Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 I believe sharpies will fade on some materials whereas prismacolors won't. In KC I've only had luck finding prismacolors at Hobby Lobby (Not at Joann's or Michaels). If you watch the weekly ad for Hobby Lobby they do 50% off all markers every few weeks or you can just use the 40% off coupons they put out a couple times a month. With the 40% off coupons you can print them off as many times as you want so just make a few trips during that week and get one marker each time. Edit: just checked their ad for this week and all art markers (including prismacolors) are 30% off -Bob
