Members gwh Posted September 15, 2011 Members Posted September 15, 2011 Fished Fri PM to Wed AM in zone 1 & 2. Did well with a olive midge(size 16 & 18) and skipping wooly worms(black & olive worked best). Weather was great, the rain started as we were leaving Wed at 1PM. The cutting slowed us down as we had to clean line and hooks more often. They did a good job in zone 2, did not fish in zone 1 after the cutting. Looked like they were running the cutter down as low as they could. There are a ton of fish in the stream. Looking at my tag numbers from this trip and comparing back to a visit last year, it looks like the numbers are about 15,000 lower this year. Might be why there are more fish in the stream. Caught fish from 4" up to two at 14-15" range. Weekend was a little busy, but most went home on Sun afternoon.
Bob A Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 Hi Gwh....Must agree, there seem to be a lot of fish in there now, although I only fish Zone 1...Sometimes, I get the distinct feeling that all the fish are gone but then, I'll watch an angler up or down stream knocking them dead with fish after fish. My conclusion: He knows what he's doing.....and I don't! Amd to clarify, these guys are legal.......no stinky stuff, no live bait... Bob A, Springfield
brittsnbirds Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 gwh, Good to hear they cut this past week. I was down the previous weekend and did ok. Using NoLuck's (secret weapon) proved fairly successful. However no one has the touch that Rich does!! My buddy and his son were using the normal "gut" fishing techniques and out catching me up by the spring. They finally switched to a peacock hurl mini-jig 1/80th and was killing them on it. I spent some time on the island Sunday morning and watched another fello hammer em. I was unable to figure out what he was using. I turned several on NoLuck's unit. Had one almost to hand that would go a good 2# but my size 16 2499spbl didn't get enough penetration. Spent the afternoon Sunday in zone 2. Again using "NoLuck's Unit". Did very well, and again had anthor one that was well over 3# but utilized a long distance release technique that I have perfected. Headed back today with the boss. She picked 2 weekends back to back but only could do one. We will see what happens with the weather change. Pat

I can only figure that I must have developed a certain knack for seeing the strike Pat. I can give you or anyone else that midge on my rod and they just don't seem to do as well as I do. My eyesight is not that great anymore either so that can't be it. Whatever it is I am glad I have picked it up. I need to start fishing more with dry flies or at least fishing with a dropper. Fishing nymphs and BH midges gets a little mind numbing after a while. Maybe I can get down there again soon as my trip to AZ got put off so I can stay in MO to run a job in Hannibal.
rcguy Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 Man, I need to take a couple days off and go. Thanks for the fishing reports. It's true Rich has the knack for detecting the bite. It's just not right!!!
