OKFlyFisher44 Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 Took monday off work to take my dad on a float trip in the drift boat for smallmouth on Elk River. Been trying to get the ol' man out on the river to catch some of these smallies and let him see how we "bass fish". My dad is a big bass guy as far as lake fishing goes and doesnt fly fish so the whole river experience was a whole new ball game for him. We hit the river about 9:00 and started to make our way downstream. Dad got into his first smallie less than a 100 yards from the put-in and the action was basically non-stop for him. Plastic worms were the ticket for him around structure in and out of the current. We tried the topwater bite with no luck. I spent 95% of my time on the oars putting Dad in position to make a good presentation and picking out likely spots but did manage to catch a few on an olive circus peanut with the fly rod. We had a great time on the river and dad got a kick out of catching some smallies for the 1st time in YEARS. Hands down...the best day of fishing I've ever had. Dont get to spend much time fishing with dad anymore so today was EPIC. Also...a big THANKS to Russ and Jean Ann at Hog Haven for the shuttle. You guys are awesome... Justin Spencer Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 Looked like a great time! Bet your dad enjoyed the drift boat. Fun thing about the boat is, the rower is just as important as the fisherman when it comes to catching fish. I enjoy putting people on fish almost as much as catching them. Chance sounds like a really sweet trip. Pops has promised to get out with me this fall or winter and I can't wait for that trip.
Trout Commander Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 Cool report for many reasons. Thanks for sharing. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
OKFlyFisher44 Posted September 29, 2011 Author Posted September 29, 2011 You're absolutely right Justin. Since buying the boat, I have been on several fishing trips and have spent the majority of the time on the sticks. I love to row and put people on fish. It was awesome to point out a spot, set up dad for a cast, and then have him stick a smallie. I had a blast. Not ready for smallie season to end! FYI, Justin, I should be down your way towards the end of October I hope. Its been too long since I've been to the NFOW. Stop by and say hi, I am thinking about putting together some type of fishing weekend the first weekend in Nov. nothing set in stone yet as I need to clarify a few things in my schedule, but might be an excuse to get down here.
