troutgnat Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 Gentlemen, Darren here from Harrison, AR. I'm no stranger to flyfishing or to Montauk state park but get there about once maybe twice a year if I'm lucky. I tend to inhabit the White, it's tributaries and Taneycomo. Anyway back to Montauk. I have trip planned for Oct. 19-24 with my best friend from Missouri and his family. Were doing the easy stay......30' camper rig in the park....LOL. I'm the flyfisher but my buddy is not so much, however I am there for the entertainment of all. So, that means I'm usually with him casting jigs 80% of the time and yes, the occasional powerbait. I'm always the guy in charge for tying all the jigs for the trip. I've been at the bench for weeks and well, some couple hundred jigs later here I am. I have graduated my buddy into flyfishing. He's still a newbie but making progress! We've always fished in the park, he's an old dog and set in his ways. He's learned the park to well....lol So, this is our first trip this late in the year. His wife has always been a summer weather gal. I've got him all jacked up about the brown spawn and the nice fish I'v been catching around my home waters night fishing. He wants to do it. So, I told him we can do this on the trophy waters outside the park while were at Montauk. HEREIN LIES MY PROBLEM......I'M IN UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY! CAN ANYONE HELP ME WITH A FEW ACCESS POINTS ON THE TROPHY WATER SECTION WHERE I CAN TAKE HIM TO STRIP SOME STREAMERS AT NIGHT. Any other tips/advice??? Maybe I can get him outside the park and teach him some true flyfishing. Thanks to all!.........D Darren Sadler "Fishing is an Education...Often the fish 'school' me, yet I do not complain. XP 590 Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 I have fished the hole right at Tan Vat- the first access- at night with both wooly's and soft hackles. There are two good spots to get in and cross so you can fish into the main hole. For any night fishing, you should know the area very well during the daytime and I felt pretty comfortable at Tan Vat. I didn't venture up or down stream, pretty much stayed right there at that hole, but caught a ton of fish. I've fished Parker's Ford-the third access- several times during the day and it also has a nice riffle hole right at the access that could be night fished, but you'd really want to explore it during the daytime first. Good luck.
