Great Fishing At Montauk

I spent the last two days fishing at Montauk. The weather was great and the fish were biting. Even though there was a nice mayfly hatch, I caught most of my fish on a crackleback, both olive and brown. I fished above the spillover and all of the way back. There are many nice holes along the way. Fish were everywhere. I did catch some on wooly buggers, scuds and a humpys. But crackleback was the fly of the day. I have to say that Montauk is one of favorite Missouri streams.

Thanks for the info. I picked up cracklebacks earlier today. Have business meetings near the park in the morning; I plan on stopping by on the way home.

Has anyone been in the last few days? Any changes to the bite? How is this rain going to affect fishing?

Sorry to say, the bite at Montauk was off. I enjoyed the place; very nice first trip. But, I caught nothing on the fly rod. Cracklebacks were a complete zero. Tried Wooly Buggers (white and olive) as well. Nothing.

Switched to my spinning gear and landed four on Berkley nymphs on Trout Magnet jigs and Trout Magnets themselves.

I noticed the anglers catching fish on fly rods were mostly using very small white jigs. It's basically a hook with a white head; not much more than that.

If anyone had a better day recently, please reply.

I fished the C&R area, fly-only, and Spring Branch. (Sorry if I'm not naming them correctly). The fish were there, just not hitting the cracklebacks and prince nymphs. I even went up to white and olive wooly buggers; no dice.

Once I switched to my spinning gear, I landed four below the falls where fly-only ends and the all-bait area begins.

There's a very big chance that I'm doing something incorrectly here. Please offer any comments you may have. Also, I imagine the weather difference from last weekend and last Tuesday must have made a difference.

Not sure. Could have been the weather. When I was there, the weather was in the 60s and 70s and there was a huge hatch. They were aggressively coming to the service. During the later part of the day, you had to go deep in the holes to get them out. My brother-in-law had more success with olive buggers with split-shots. You definitely have to give it another try sometime. I typically fish above the spillover and back up through the fly-only area. Lots of great holes. The amazing thing is that you can see fish everywhere. They were surrounding me like sharks. Take care.
