Wayne SW/MO Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 One factor not mentioned, here, is the age of the occupant. Reflexes deteriorate over the years and a canoe with poor stability is a bit more of an inconvenience. I personally have not experienced any of this; it is what I hear from my friends. I can't see that being a problem if someone has some experience. My solo and my SOT don't have a lot of initial stability, but I'm use to it and don't try to compensate. Stability is a sum and what you gain in one you will lose in the other. In small maneuverable craft it is obvious and important to the experience. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
stinger160 Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 Got to test drive Woodmans modified pirogue. Really impressed, tracked straight, very responsive, once I got used to it felt very stable. looks like that will be the design I'll build with woodmans help. Can't wait to get started!
woodman Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Stinger Here are the specks from the web site .. The Touring Pirogue TV 15-32 .. Overall Length 15' Max. Beam 32" Height at bow/mid/stern 13"/10"/12" Rocker bow/stern 1.5" / 1.5" Recommended weight on board 150-500 lbs. Estimated weight* 42 - 53 lbs. This design is a wider version of our Touring Pirogue - TV 15-29. The 15-32 version offers more stability and load capacity. It is ideal for taller paddlers or paddlers who want to sit in a higher seat position and still have comfortable stability. http://s147.photobucket.com/albums/r302/scrawford_photos/
stinger160 Posted December 31, 2011 Author Posted December 31, 2011 That looks perfect. Will keep in touch.
Wayne SW/MO Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 I would question the handling of a pirogue on feat flow because it is a stillwater design. The ones I've seen didn't have a lot of freeboard. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
stinger160 Posted January 1, 2012 Author Posted January 1, 2012 Woodman, I've been doing some research on plywood availability. Schutte Lumber has some 4 X 8, 1/4 inch marine grade a-c grade. They didn't give the price. Do you have any experience with this grade? Also, found the place in Des Moines, Cedar Tree Inc, they have the 4 MM okoume. Specialize in boat materials etc. expoxy and so forth. Sent both places emails and hope to know more specifics soon.
