Every once in a while I take a scouting trip - no woods involved, not looking for that secret hiding place for the trophy buck or a giant gobbler - just to the lake. Consistency is a jewel, it's what seperates average anglers from good anglers, I'm by no means a good angler - just one that loves to fish. From my observations of the old timers, the ones who always seem to catch fish regardless the time of year or weather, they know several locations to fish. When an older gentleman can tell you the number of trees or brush piles down a certain stretch of bank on any arm of the lake it's time to listen up.

I decided to venture out the last year and take some scouting trips, run the humminbird side immaging over new territory. When I find something that looks good I'll mark it on the gps, stop and fish for a little while. Some trips have been great, others no so. However I find it exciting to locate a new brush pile or underwater row of trees and start catching fish. Knowledge is king and trying to increase it will help anybody's stringer.

The last two week's I've decided to take advantage of the unusally warm winter and beautiful sunshine. Yesterday was one of those special days, record high, no wind - even had to shed the jacket a time or two. Fortunate to mark nine new brush piles, some of which were red hot. Here's the scoop:

Brush Piles 20-40 feet deep.

Crappie in the top of the brush (16-26 feet deep).

Jigs only - white, blue, blue/chart, black/chart, motor oil.

Caught a limit of quality fish plus several just shy of the length limit.

I've been working an area I've never fished much and starting to really enjoy it. Fished mostly from the dam down the first four or five miles of the Lindly arm. Good luck to all and hope to see you on the water!
