DaddyO Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 Started at the island below the kiddie pool. Got on the water about 11:30am. Temps were in the 40's and it thinned the crowds a little bit. Made for a peaceful day of fishing. Normally, I fish my hare and coppers, however, I didn't have any in my flybox, which was strange because I could've sworn that I had tied some. Turns out that I did and I found them in one of my vest pockets when I was taking it off and leaving for the day. Anyway, I had a couple of new flies that I wanted to try. They caught fish but were not durable enough the way I had them tied. Back to the drawing board on those. The fish were really keyed in on a small white midge hatch that came off all day. The fish were really active, popping the top of the water all over the place. I used a small CDC puff midge and hooked 3 or 4 but could not bring any of them to hand. Which was OK as it was still fun. I fished both sides of the island catching fish on a variety of flies but not consistently on any one particular fly. i.e. fish were landed on purple/olive wooly bugger, white wooly bugger, white worm, yellow worm and finally found a consistent producer in a bead head gold ribbed hares ear #14. Around 20 or so fish for the day. Even though Saturday was colder, it was a beautiful day to be on the water. There were a few wind gusts, but for the most part there was very little wind. On The Fly 6 Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 I fished today. I got on the water around 10:40. Started above the kiddie pool in the deeper water and got a take on the first cast. Unfortunately, the fish got off as soon as I started working it in. I was excited! I knew for sure I wasn't getting skunked in that area again. I was wrong. I had numerous takes, and I rolled a fish or two, but brought nothing to hand. I also wanted to play around with some flies I had tied up, so I switched quite often. After about an hour of rejection, plus needing another layer of clothing because of the wind, I headed back to the parking lot to grab my jacket and gloves. I then decided to try the south side of the island. I tied on a brassie sz 14 and put it about 8-10 inches below an indicator and cast out towards a fallen tree on the far bank. First drift, first fish. I managed 3 more before I decided to throw a wooly I'd tied up. Cast out and started stripping it in. Another fish. I fished the wooly for about 45 min before getting tired of the wind. I had at least 1 or 2 takes every cast and with the water being clear and fairly shallow, I got to watch most of them! I went back to dead drifting a brassie again and managed a few more before tying on a pink jig looking thing I'd made. It caught a few fish, so I guess they thought it was edible. Overall it was a pretty good day. Not sure what my finishing number was, but it was way better than my last trip to the LIR! Members asap52 Posted January 30, 2012 Members Posted January 30, 2012 Got on the river at about 12:15 and started on the NE side of the island. Took about 10 min. and a fly change to start hooking up. I caught 20 on the NE side of the island and then moved up river just below the boulders. Had a lot of bait fishers there and took two changes to figure out what they wanted. Moved up above the boulders and tore them up!! Had to have caught between 40 and 50 fish. Finished the day at about 3:30, was a bit windy but I think it actually helped the bite. Flies that worked for me today were a rusty midge, Primrose & Preal midge and 3 different colors of a yummy worm. Tight lines, Corky
DaddyO Posted January 30, 2012 Author Posted January 30, 2012 Corky, did the worms work for you above the boulders? I had to switch to the BHGRHE above the boulders to get consistent hook-ups. DaddyO We all make decisions; but, in the end, our decisions make us.
Members asap52 Posted January 30, 2012 Members Posted January 30, 2012 Yes, that is what I caught the most trout on above the boulders.
Members SteveA Posted January 30, 2012 Members Posted January 30, 2012 Daddyo, You mentioned the CDC puff midge, my brother-in-law and I always notice that small white fly on the lir that often is what the trout are taking on top. We are both fairly new to the tying part of fly fishing and I was wondering if you could give me some tips to try and tie that one? Right now my tying is limited to wooly buggers, midges, and san juan worms. But those usually suffice. Thanks, SA
JCWolfe Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 I fished both sides of the island catching fish on a variety of flies but not consistently on any one particular fly. This has been the case the last couple of times I have went. I like it better when you can use one fly all day Okiemountaineer

I just happend to have 2 of them in my flybox. I actually purchased them at the flyshop on the Lower Mountain Fork about 4 years ago. But here is a video that I found that shows the fly being tied. http://oregonflyfishingblog.com/2012/01/02/cdc-oiler-puff-blue-winged-olive-emerger-fly-tying-video/ DaddyO We all make decisions; but, in the end, our decisions make us.
Members SteveA Posted February 1, 2012 Members Posted February 1, 2012 Many thanks for the link DaddyO. Hopefully I'll successfully tie a few before the weekend.
