Members Jeff House Posted September 11, 2006 Members Posted September 11, 2006 Was wondering if anyone had any night fishing tips for Taney that they would be willing to share? I am going to be down this Thursday and Friday and plan on giving it a try Thursday night. The last few times that I've tried the night thing my success was slim to none at all. I've got a good selection of Mohair leeches tied up in dark colors (olive, purple, black) because that seems to be a favorite fly on a lot of posts. What about set-up and retrieve? Do the slower, deeper sections provide more night time success? Any helpful tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Terry Beeson Posted September 11, 2006 Posted September 11, 2006 Tip #1... Hire "Night Angler" Leonard to take you... TIGHT LINES, YA'LL "There he stands, draped in more equipment than a telephone lineman, trying to outwit an organism with a brain no bigger than a breadcrumb, and getting licked in the process." - Paul O’Neil

Micheal Kyle Posted September 11, 2006 Posted September 11, 2006 Jeff, I understand your frustration with the night thing. Nothing against Leonard, myself or anybody eles that guides down there at night, but I think that there are enough of us that fish down there at night could help. I log about 125-150 nights/year on Taneycomo and I have to say it has been years since I have seen Taney like it has been the last couple of weeks. It could just be my style of fishing I love to streamer fish and thats it that all I will do. There have been a couple of freinds that have been trying to talk me into nymphing at night with the lighted indicators, I know that it works but just can't bring myself to try something new. A very good frind of mine was down Friday night and that's how Rick was fishing and has been doing it for years. When we came back to the parking lot around 3am he came up to see how was and I said not good only one fish. He said that he had 8-9 fish. So there you have it sometimes it's great and other times it bad. The mohair leechs work awesome and are probally my number 1 go to fly. At night I will use the blood red, evil leperchon, jungle juice, black, and white. I will let the fish dictate how fast to strip them in. Some nights it is fast and some nights it is slow. Another good pat is the Muddler minnow when the fish are hitting the surface at night thats when I will use them. A couple more and I will shut up the Bunny leech size 6-10 red, black, purple. And the Zonkers same size and color. I usually will fish these flies all down stream and strip back up stream sometimes I will fish them on the swing. If you would like I will be down on friday night and we could get together and I would love to show you ways to fish Taney at night. I have guide trip Tuesday and Thursday night but would love to fish with you on friday night. Michael To Know People Is To Know Thier Ways!
Members Jeff House Posted September 12, 2006 Author Members Posted September 12, 2006 Thanks for the tips Michael. I am going to keep at it and one of these nights I'll hit it right. Would love to fish with you Friday night but I have to head back to Kansas City Friday evening. My buddy that's going with me has to be at work Sat. morning at 6:30 so I've got to have him home at a decent hour. I really appreciate the offer though and hope we can hook up another time. I really enjoy fishing with new folks, it seems like there's always something to be learned even if you think you know what you're doing (which I don't!). I'm going to give Leonard a call though since he will be down Thursday night anyway. With any luck I can glean a few helpful pointers to improve my nighttime success rate. One other quick question, are you guys using a sinking line to get your flies down in the deeper holes or just using long leaders with weighted flies? Thanks again for the help.
Micheal Kyle Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 The only time I use a sink tip or a sinking line is down past fall creek in the deeper water. Up top from pr to the cable I just use a floating line 9'-12' leader and weight on my flies. Good luck If I did not have a guide trip Thursday I would fish with you guys.
