Terry Beeson Posted September 11, 2006 Posted September 11, 2006 I had not fished the Little Red since my "bait casting" days, but had the opportunity when my wife announced we were going to some friends' in Batesville for the weekend. Saturday morning was not to productive. Fished Cow Shoals and found it did not suit my style of fly fishing. I did manage to land 12... but they were all 4 inch Browns... After lunch, I moved up to JFK just in time to watch the river rise... They had just started generating. So, I went back to Batesville for some hot off the smoker pork ribs and turkey. Sunday morning was better. Landed a nice one at JFK, but the bank began to line up with mom, pop, brother, sister, and all twelve kids... So I moved down to Libby. Dodged a few boats coming through and churning up my drift line.... But I managed to land one on a scud and one on a Prince Nymph.... 'Bows that is... not boaters... although I did whiz a hook by one boat driver's ear for driving through my lane. Nothing to write home about, but sure beat a day mowing the grass... Greg Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 Terry I'm curious what you said about the little red (cow shoals) not fitting your fishing style? I've always wanted to go to the Little Red but haven't made it yet. Maybe it's not worth the 3 hour drive for me? Terry Beeson Posted October 22, 2006 Author Posted October 22, 2006 Greg, I went to Cow Shoals several years ago during a week long consulting trip to Heber Springs. It was during a very hot summer and I remember walking down to Cow one afternoon and how cool it was down there with the trees and the cool water flowing through. I spent every afternoon there cooling off and unwinding. I wanted to fish it at that time, but did not have any fishing gear with me (was a bait fisherman then..) This trip, I decided I would definately try Cow out. It was my first time wading that stretch. It is pretty shallow with a lot of riffles in the area. I just seem to do better in deeper water with holes or a big hole just above a fall. Basically, I felt "lost" as to what fly to toss and how to fish it. I'm sure it's good fishing if you use the right techniques. Just didn't have the right technique that day.
