Jack Jones Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Finally broke out the tools I bought last weekend both to practice my whip finish and to tie a woolly bugger. Photos are attached but, wow, I put way too much maribou in that tail. It's pretty bushy. I had to laugh when I was done. I'm gonna enjoy tying, but I'll sure need the practice. I just wish I had time to do it more often. That said, I will fish this darn ugly, bushy fly and won't give up until it catches something whether it be the swimming kind, the leafy kind behind me, or the rocky kind at the bottom of the river. Wayne SW/MO Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 I agree that you might thin the tail. You can do a lot of change up on buggers. Add rubber legs, use up some of the webby saddle hackle, make a light bottom and dark top, beads and coneheads. They can be fun to tie because the pattern has become a non standard. Never throw away a fly that will hold up to fishing cause the fish ain't that smart and often not that particular, especialy the majority of trout in Missouri. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

I agree. Some of my flies are really ugly, but they work as good or sometimes better than the really pretty ones.
